Planning Your Cape Peninsula Drive
The Cape Peninsula circular route is one of the world's most spectacular coastal drives, showcasing dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, charming seaside villages, and the meeting point of two oceans. The full loop from Cape Town covers approximately 140 kilometres and takes 7 to 9 hours with stops for photography, penguins, and lunch.
The Circular Route
Most visitors drive the peninsula in an anti-clockwise direction — departing Cape Town along the Atlantic Seaboard (Clifton, Camps Bay), then Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak Drive, Noordhoek, Simon's Town, Boulders Beach, Cape Point, and returning via False Bay (Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek). Driving anti-clockwise keeps the ocean on your passenger side for better views and ensures you reach Cape Point before large tour buses arrive.
Route Breakdown (Anti-Clockwise):
- Cape Town City (Start) — Departure from City Bowl or V&A Waterfront
- Camps Bay (10 km) — Beach views, Twelve Apostles mountain backdrop
- Hout Bay (20 km) — Fishing harbor, seal island boat trips, Chapman's Peak start
- Chapman's Peak Drive (30 km) — 9km scenic toll road, 114 curves, clifftop views
- Noordhoek Beach (40 km) — Long white-sand beach, horse riding
- Simon's Town (60 km) — Naval town, Boulders Beach penguin colony
- Cape Point (75 km) — Nature reserve, lighthouse, Cape of Good Hope, dramatic cliffs
- Return via False Bay (~140 km total) — Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, scenic coastal villages
Chapman's Peak Drive
Often called "Chappies," this 9-kilometre toll road is the route's crown jewel. Carved into the cliffs between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, it features 114 curves and rises 593 metres above the Atlantic Ocean. The road is prone to rockfalls, so always check its status before traveling. Toll fees apply (small fee per vehicle). Use designated pull-offs for photography — stopping mid-road is dangerous and prohibited.
Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope
Cape Point Nature Reserve sits at the southwestern tip of the African continent (the southernmost point is Cape Agulhas, 150km southeast). The reserve includes the Cape of Good Hope landmark, the old lighthouse perched on dramatic sea cliffs, hiking trails, baboon colonies, and endemic fynbos vegetation. A funicular railway or walking path leads to the lighthouse viewpoint. Entry fees apply. Plan 1.5 to 2 hours for exploration.
Boulders Beach Penguin Colony
Located in Simon's Town, Boulders Beach hosts a protected colony of African penguins. Wooden boardwalks allow close viewing without disturbing the birds. An adjacent beach permits swimming among the penguins in sheltered waters. Entry fee applies (separate from Cape Point). Plan 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Coastal Villages — Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek
The return journey along False Bay passes through charming coastal villages. Muizenberg is famous for its colorful beach huts and surf culture. Kalk Bay is an artsy fishing village with galleries, antique shops, and seafood restaurants. Fish Hoek offers a safe swimming beach. Stop for lunch, coffee, or browsing.
Travel Tips
- Best Time: Year-round destination. Summer (November–March) offers warm beach weather. Winter (June–September) brings whales in False Bay and clearer skies for photography.
- Duration: Allow a full day (7–9 hours). Guided tours typically depart 08:00–09:00 and return 17:00–18:00.
- Self-Drive vs Guided: Self-drive offers flexibility and freedom. Guided tours provide expert commentary, handle logistics, and eliminate parking concerns.
- Wind Warning: The Cape is famous for its wind, especially in summer. Chapman's Peak may close in extreme weather. Check conditions before departure.
- Baboons: Wild baboons are common at Cape Point. Keep windows closed, do not feed them, and never leave food visible in your vehicle.
