The Heart of the Congo Basin

Odzala-Kokoua National Park is not a place you stumble upon. It is a 13,600-square-kilometre fortress of primary rainforest in the Republic of Congo, reached only by chartered plane from Brazzaville. This is the Congo Basin at its most pristine — no roads, no crowds, no compromise. The park protects one of Africa’s most significant populations of western lowland gorillas, alongside forest elephants, chimpanzees, forest buffalo, bongo antelope and over 400 species of birds.

What makes Odzala extraordinary is not just the wildlife but the way you encounter it. You wade through swamps tracking gorilla trails with Ba’Aka guides who know every bent twig. You sit in silence on baï platforms as elephant herds emerge at dawn, their tusks stained red from mineral mud. You fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle and wake to grey parrots wheeling overhead.

Western Lowland Gorilla Trekking — Ngaga Camp

The primary draw of Odzala is gorilla trekking from Ngaga Camp — stilted tents beneath the rainforest canopy. Ngaga is home to habituated western lowland gorilla families, and every morning Ba’Aka trackers locate them before you set out.

Western lowland gorilla trekking is not the same as mountain gorilla trekking. The terrain is lowland jungle — hot, humid, thick with vines. You wade through water, push through undergrowth. Treks can last 30 minutes or five hours. When you find them, the forest goes quiet. A silverback rests against a tree trunk. Juveniles play overhead. Mothers nurse infants in dappled light.

Baï Wildlife Viewing — Lango Camp

A baï is a forest clearing where mineral-rich sedges grow and wildlife emerges to drink and feed. Lango Baï is one of the largest in the Congo Basin, and Lango Camp is built on stilts overlooking it. The camp feels like a treehouse. Early morning the elephants emerge — forest elephants with straight tusks stained red from mineral mud. Behind them come buffalo herds, bongo antelope and sitatunga wading the shallows.

River Safaris — Mboko Camp

Mboko Camp sits at the confluence of the Lekoli and Mambili rivers where jungle meets savanna. You kayak oxbow channels past kingfishers and forest buffalo, or take motorboat cruises looking for hippos and sitatunga. The landscape here feels different — wide skies, open grasslands. At night you spotlight serval, aardvark and porcupine on one of the few night drives permitted in the Republic of Congo.

Best Time to Visit

The long dry season (June to September) is best for gorilla trekking and baï wildlife. Trails are drier and wildlife concentrates near water. The short dry season (December to February) is also excellent. The wet season (March to May, October to November) brings lush green forests but muddy trails. Gorilla trekking happens year-round.

How Much Does an Odzala Safari Cost?

Expect $10,575 to $19,745 per person for 7 to 12-night all-inclusive journeys. This includes charter flights Brazzaville to Odzala return, luxury tented accommodation, all meals and house drinks, guided activities, gorilla permits, park fees and expert guides. Excluded: international flights, Republic of Congo visa (~$100), Brazzaville accommodation, tips.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does western lowland gorilla trekking differ from mountain gorilla trekking?

Western lowland gorilla trekking is more physically demanding. You trek through dense lowland rainforest, often wading through swamps. Treks can last 30 minutes to 5+ hours. Sightings are less guaranteed. But the encounters are just as magical, and Odzala offers baï wildlife viewing that Rwanda and Uganda do not.

Is the Republic of Congo safe for tourists?

Yes. The Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) is considered safe and is distinct from the DRC. Odzala is well-managed with excellent safety protocols. You fly directly in by charter plane.
