1. Table Mountain Summit at Sunset (Cape Town)

If you propose in only one place in Africa, make it Table Mountain at sunset. This is the most iconic proposal spot on the continent — a flat-topped mountain a thousand metres above Cape Town, with 360-degree views of the city, the ocean, and the mountains beyond. As the sun drops toward the Atlantic, the city below begins to glow. The harbour lights flicker on. The ocean turns gold, then pink, then deep indigo. And if you have timed it right, you and your partner are standing on the summit with champagne, a photographer hiding among the boulders, and the whole mountain to yourselves.

There are two ways to reach the summit: cable car or helicopter. The cable car is iconic, affordable (around R400 return), and runs until late, but you share the mountain with other tourists. For a private proposal, book the first or last cable car of the day, when crowds are lightest. Better still, charter a helicopter from the V&A Waterfront. You fly around the mountain at golden hour, land on the summit, and have the plateau to yourselves for 30–45 minutes. The pilot will set up champagne, flowers, and a blanket, then retreat to the helicopter while you propose. When you are ready, you fly back down over the city as the lights come on below. 2. Victoria Falls at Golden Hour (Zimbabwe / Zambia)

Victoria Falls is the world's largest waterfall, and one of its most romantic. A curtain of water 1.7 kilometres wide plunges 108 metres into a narrow gorge, sending mist 400 metres into the air and painting rainbows across the spray. David Livingstone called it 'scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.' He was not exaggerating. There are several ways to propose at Victoria Falls, each with its own drama.
