Why Ten Days Is the Perfect Length

Botswana rewards the traveller who slows down. Its camps are small, its concessions vast and its wildlife best appreciated at an unhurried pace — and ten days is the length that lets you do that properly. It is long enough to combine three genuinely different regions, to settle into the rhythm of each camp, and to absorb the twin flight days without ever feeling rushed. Shorter trips force you to choose between the water of the delta and the big game of the north; ten days lets you have both.

The itinerary that follows is our most-requested Botswana journey — a fly-in circuit that begins in the water-rich Okavango, moves to the predator-dense Linyanti, and finishes on the elephant-thronged Chobe riverfront before an easy exit to Victoria Falls or home. Every transfer is by light aircraft, every camp is small and luxurious, and every region adds something the others cannot. For a broader view of the country, pair this with our guide to the best time to visit Botswana.

Days 1–3: The Okavango Delta

Your journey begins with a light-aircraft flight from Maun into the heart of the Okavango Delta — a spectacular introduction as the channels, lagoons and palm islands unfold beneath the wings. For the first three nights you settle into a water-rich delta camp, where safari means something quite different from the dusty drives most people picture. Here you glide by mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe) through papyrus-lined channels, drift past drinking elephants in a low aluminium boat, and step onto game-rich islands for walks and drives.

The delta's islands hold superb leopard, and its floodplains are alive with red lechwe, elephant, hippo and an extraordinary cast of birds. Days here follow the light — early activities, a leisurely brunch back in camp, siesta through the heat, and an afternoon on the water that melts into a sundowner as the sky turns molten. It is the gentlest, most romantic opening imaginable, and it sets the tone for everything that follows.

Days 1–3 • The Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta — a pristine inland water-world of crystal channels, palm islands and leopard-rich floodplains, explored by mokoro, boat and 4x4 from small, fly-in luxury camps.

Days 4–6: The Linyanti and Selinda

A short flight north-east lifts you from the water to the wild, game-rich concessions of the Linyanti and Selinda. This is big-cat and wild-dog country — vast private wildernesses where off-road driving and night drives are permitted, and where you are likely to be the only vehicle at a sighting. The Linyanti's riverine woodland and floodplains draw large elephant herds in the dry season, big lion prides patrol the marsh edges, and the region is one of Africa's last strongholds for the endangered African wild dog.

The pace here is more classic-safari — early morning drives in the cool, tracking a leopard or following a hunting pack of dogs; unhurried afternoons; and thrilling night drives that reveal the aardwolf, civet, genet and honey badger the daylight hides. Three nights lets your guide really work the area, returning to a lion den or a leopard's territory across successive days. For more on this region, see our Linyanti and Selinda safari guide.

The Linyanti and Selinda — vast private concessions of big cats and wild dogs, where off-road and night drives are permitted and you are often the only vehicle at a sighting.

Days 7–9: The Chobe Riverfront

The final leg brings you to the Chobe — home to the largest elephant population on earth. A flight to Kasane and a transfer to a riverfront lodge (or the wonderful option of a luxury houseboat) place you on the banks of a river that, in the dry season, draws elephants in their thousands. Here the star activity is the water: a leisurely afternoon boat cruise brings you level with drinking elephants, yawning hippos, basking crocodiles and skimming carmine bee-eaters, all in the golden light of the late day.

Morning game drives in Chobe National Park add lion, giraffe, sable and vast buffalo herds, while the river itself offers some of the finest and most relaxed wildlife photography in Africa. After the intensity of the Linyanti, the Chobe's easy, water-borne rhythm is a perfect finale — spectacular sightings enjoyed with a cold drink in hand as the sun sinks over the floodplain.

Day 10: Departure or Extend to Victoria Falls

On your final morning a short flight carries you out — either directly home via Maun or Kasane, or on to Victoria Falls for a spectacular two- or three-night extension. We almost always recommend the Falls: it is barely an hour away, and standing before the thundering curtain of the Zambezi is a fitting crescendo to a Botswana journey. It also turns a superb safari into a complete southern-Africa adventure. See our Victoria Falls safari combination guide for how to add it seamlessly.

Whether you finish at the Falls or fly straight home, ten days will have given you the full sweep of Botswana — the hush of the delta at dawn, the drama of a wild-dog hunt, the spectacle of a thousand elephants at the river's edge. It is, quite simply, one of the greatest safari journeys on earth.

The Three Regions Compared

Each leg of this journey delivers something the others cannot. This is how the delta, the Linyanti and the Chobe differ — and why combining all three makes for such a complete safari.

What This 10-Day Safari Costs (2026)

Botswana runs a deliberate low-volume, high-value model, so prices sit above mass-market destinations — but you are buying space, privacy and some of the finest guiding in Africa. Here is a realistic per-person guide for the ten-day fly-in circuit, all-inclusive of camps, meals, drinks, activities and internal light-aircraft flights.

Best Time for This Itinerary

This circuit is superb year-round, but the season shapes the experience. The dry months concentrate game around water for the classic big-herd spectacle; the green season brings lush scenery, newborns and lower prices.

How We Tailor This Itinerary

This ten-day route is a framework, not a fixed package. We tailor every element to you — swapping camps to match your budget and style, adjusting the balance of water and land, adding a family-friendly camp or a honeymoon suite, or extending nights where your passions lie. Photographers might add a private vehicle in the Linyanti; couples might choose a delta camp with private plunge pools; families might base in a camp with a dedicated guide and flexible mealtimes.

Because we hold relationships with the best small camps across Botswana, we can secure the right rooms at the right time and sequence the flights so the whole journey flows. Tell us your dates, your interests and your budget, and we will build the ten days around exactly what matters most to you.

10-DAY ITINERARY

Delta, big game and river

Ten days is the sweet spot for Botswana — long enough to pair the water of the Okavango, the predators of the Linyanti and the elephant-thronged Chobe into one seamless, fly-in luxury journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ten days is arguably the ideal length. It lets you combine three contrasting regions — typically the Okavango Delta, the Linyanti and the Chobe — with three or four nights in each, so you experience water and land safari without rushing between camps.

A fully luxury fly-in trip runs from roughly $9,000 to $16,000+ per person, depending on the camps, season and whether you add private vehicles or a Victoria Falls extension. Botswana's low-volume, high-cost model means prices are higher than mass-market destinations but the exclusivity is unmatched.

Our favourite is Okavango Delta (water safari) to the Linyanti or Selinda (big cats and wild dogs) to the Chobe riverfront (elephant herds and boat cruises), finishing with an optional extension to Victoria Falls.

All transfers are by light aircraft, typically 30–60 minute flights between airstrips. The flights are scenic and part of the adventure, offering aerial views of the delta and its wildlife.

The dry season (May–October) is prime — game concentrates around water, the delta flood peaks and sightings are superb. The green season (November–April) offers lush scenery, newborn animals and lower prices.

Absolutely. We tailor everything — the camps, the balance of water and land, honeymoon or family touches, private vehicles for photographers, and extensions to Victoria Falls or the Kalahari. It is built entirely around you.

Botswana's best small camps are tiny — often just six to twelve tents — and sell out fastest in the peak dry season. We recommend booking 10 to 14 months ahead for July to October travel, and at least 6 months ahead for other dates, to secure the exact camps and flight connections that make the itinerary flow.

Pack light and neutral — light-aircraft transfers usually limit luggage to around 20kg in soft bags. Bring neutral-coloured layers, a warm fleece for chilly winter mornings, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, high-factor sun cream, insect repellent, binoculars and a good camera. Most camps offer same-day laundry, so you need less than you think.

Yes — with the right camps. Several delta and Chobe camps welcome families and offer interconnecting rooms, family units, flexible mealtimes and dedicated guides. We simply select family-friendly camps, keep flight legs short, and balance the pace so younger travellers stay engaged throughout.
