The Most Surreal Camp in Africa

Every so often a place refuses to fit any category, and Jack's Camp is exactly that. Forget the green floodplains of the Okavango; here the landscape is a shimmering, blinding white — the Makgadikgadi, one of the largest salt pans on Earth, the ghost of a super-lake that dried up thousands of years ago. And on its edge, in a grove of palms, sits a cluster of dark green tents that look as though they've been lifted straight out of a 1940s expedition.

Jack's Camp is a Botswana institution, founded in memory of the pioneering Jack Bousfield and shaped by his son Ralph — a naturalist, showman and storyteller of the highest order. In 2020 the camp was completely rebuilt by Natural Selection, and it reopened grander and more comfortable than ever, while losing none of its eccentric, museum-like magic.

This is not a big-five camp. You come to Jack's not for lions on every drive, but for something rarer: a sense of deep time, of standing on an ancient lakebed under the largest sky you will ever see, of the desert's strange and specialised life. It is theatre, romance and wonder rolled into one.

The Tents: A Bedouin World of Persian Rugs

Jack's has ten enormous tents, each a riot of texture and history — Persian rugs layered on the floor, campaign furniture, brass and copper fittings, four-poster beds and roll-top baths, all under soaring green canvas. The style is unapologetically romantic and theatrical: part explorer's tent, part maharaja's pavilion. Each has its own veranda and plunge pool, and the whole camp is shaded by a rare grove of ilala palms.

At the heart of the camp is a tea tent and a genuine natural-history museum — cabinets of fossils, artefacts and specimens that speak to the Bousfield family's decades of exploration. It's the sort of place where you could happily spend a rainy hour (though rain here is rare), drink in hand, lost in stories.

The Experiences: Meerkats, Quad Bikes and Sleep-Outs

What you do at Jack's is what sets it apart. The signature experience is time with the camp's habituated meerkats: in the dry months you can sit quietly among a colony as they emerge from their burrows and, sometimes, use a human shoulder as a lookout post. It's one of the most joyful wildlife encounters in Africa.

Then there are the quad-bike expeditions out onto the salt pans themselves (dry season only) — riding for miles across the cracked white crust until the horizon vanishes and the land meets the sky in a single dazzling line. Add walks with Zu/'hoasi Bushman trackers, who reveal the desert's hidden survival secrets; horse riding across the pans; stargazing that has to be seen to be believed; and sleep-outs on a bedroll beneath the Milky Way.

Plan My Stay at Jack's Camp

Wet Season vs Dry Season

Jack's has two very different faces. In the dry season (roughly May to October) the pans are hard and white, quad-biking and meerkats are at their best, and the desert reveals its stark, minimalist beauty. In the green season (roughly December to March), the rains transform the eastern Makgadikgadi into grasslands that draw one of Africa's great secrets — a huge zebra and wildebeest migration, trailed by lions and cheetahs, and vast flocks of flamingos at nearby Nata.

Neither is 'better' — they're simply different experiences. For the classic salt-pan theatre and meerkats, come in the dry months; for green landscapes, migrating herds and birdlife, come in the wet.

Dining and Service

Dining is as characterful as everything else at Jack's — long tables under canvas, silver service in the middle of the desert, and surprises like dinners set out on the pans themselves under lantern light. The food is excellent and generous, the wine flows, and the guiding team, steeped in the Bousfield tradition, are storytellers as much as naturalists.

Who Is Jack's Camp For?

Jack's is for the curious — travellers who want more than a checklist of big cats, who are seduced by landscape, history and eccentricity. It's wonderful for honeymooners (few things are more romantic than a sleep-out under the Milky Way) and a brilliant contrast camp on any Botswana itinerary. Pair it with a water-based Delta camp like Duba Plains or the best of the luxury lodges of the Okavango for the ultimate range of experiences.

It's fly-in from Maun (about an hour) or reachable by road, and while it isn't the cheapest camp in Botswana, its sheer originality makes it one of the most memorable places to stay anywhere in Africa.

Private Tours Cape Town weaves Jack's Camp into seamless Botswana journeys — pairing the surreal Kalahari with the green heart of the Okavango.
