A Lodge Beneath the Virunga Volcanoes

Mount Gahinga Lodge sits at around 2,300 metres in the foothills of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda's slice of the trans-boundary Virunga massif shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. From the lodge lawns the three volcanoes — Muhabura the "guide", Gahinga the "pile of stones", and jagged Sabyinyo the "old man's teeth" — fill the horizon. It is one of the great mountain views in Africa, and it changes hour by hour as cloud pours over the saddles between the peaks.

This is the quietest and most intimate of Volcanoes Safaris' lodges, and arguably the most characterful. Everything is built from local volcanic stone and thatch, with dry-stone walls threading between the bandas in a way that echoes the terraced hillsides of the surrounding Bufumbira country. Because Mgahinga sees far fewer visitors than Bwindi, a stay here feels genuinely off the beaten track — a frontier lodge with five-star hospitality.

The Virunga volcanoes and the forests where gorillas and golden monkeys roam

The Bandas — Stone, Thatch and Volcano Windows

Each banda is a solid stone cottage crowned with a thick thatched roof, warm and snug against the cool mountain air. Inside, a wood-burning stove or fireplace anchors the room, big picture windows frame the volcanoes, and hand-crafted furniture, Batwa weavings and soft linens keep the mood restful. Bathrooms are generous, with a deep tub and hot water drawn from the lodge's own spring — the "gahinga" of the name refers to the volcanic stones that shape everything here.

At the heart of the lodge, a beautiful vaulted main lounge is built around a copper-hooded stone fireplace, with a separate dining room under soaring thatch and the atmospheric Dian Fossey-inspired reading room hung with maps and memorabilia. Meals lean on garden-grown vegetables and Ugandan produce, and evenings end with a nightcap by the fire while the volcanoes turn to silhouettes outside.

Gorillas, Golden Monkeys and the Batwa Trail

Mgahinga is home to one habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group — unusually cohesive and, in recent years, largely resident inside the Ugandan park, making sightings reliable. A Uganda gorilla permit ($800 per person) buys the standard one hour with the family after a briefing at the park gate, a short drive from the lodge. Mgahinga is also the best place in Uganda to trek the endangered golden monkeys, whose acrobatic troops flash orange through the bamboo on a shorter, gentler walk ($60 permit).

The lodge's deepest story, though, is human. Mount Gahinga was developed hand in hand with the Batwa, the forest hunter-gatherers displaced when the parks were created. The Batwa Trail leads you into the forest with Batwa guides who demonstrate the skills of their ancestral home, and the nearby Gahinga Batwa Village — funded through the lodge and its trust — has given the community secure land and housing for the first time. It is one of the most meaningful cultural encounters in East Africa.

Conservation and Community

Through the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust, guest stays underwrite the Gahinga Batwa Village, reforestation on the park boundary and healthcare and education projects around Kisoro. Staying at Mount Gahinga Lodge is not a passive luxury — it is a direct investment in the survival of both the Virunga ecosystem and the Batwa culture that has lived alongside it for millennia.

BENEATH THREE VOLCANOES

Mount Gahinga Lodge stands in the foothills of the Virunga Mountains at the edge of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, framed by three perfect volcanic cones — Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo. Stone-and-thatch bandas ring a garden of terraces and dry-stone walls, and beyond them the peaks rise into the cloud where mountain gorillas and rare golden monkeys share the bamboo. This is Uganda at its most cinematic: a lodge built with the Batwa forest people, in a landscape that feels like the roof of Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mount Gahinga Lodge lies in the foothills of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park near Kisoro in south-western Uganda, framed by the Virunga volcanoes Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo. It is a short drive from the park gate.

Yes. Mgahinga has one habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, and is Uganda's premier destination for trekking the endangered golden monkeys in the bamboo zone. Gorilla permits are $800 and golden-monkey permits $60.

The Batwa Trail is a guided cultural walk led by Batwa forest people — the original inhabitants of these mountains — who share their hunting, gathering and spiritual traditions. The lodge helped establish the nearby Gahinga Batwa Village that supports the community.

The Nyakagezi family has become largely resident within the Ugandan park in recent years, making Mgahinga one of the more dependable places to see gorillas. As with all wild primates, movements can vary, so a flexible itinerary is wise.

Rates include accommodation, all meals, house drinks, a Batwa village visit, guided nature walks, WiFi and laundry. Gorilla and golden-monkey permits, the full Batwa Trail, premium drinks and private transfers are extra.

Trekking is possible year-round. The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) give clearer volcano views and firmer trails, while the green seasons are quieter and especially photogenic as cloud drapes the peaks.
