Key Takeaways
  • A stilted, thatched lodge set right above the Shire River in Liwonde National Park — Malawi's finest wildlife stage.
  • Boat safaris are the signature: drift past hippo pods, crocodiles and elephants coming down to drink.
  • Liwonde now holds the Big Five again, including reintroduced lion, cheetah and black rhino, plus one of Africa's densest elephant populations.
  • Run by Central African Wilderness Safaris, with a genuine conservation story woven through every stay.

Why Mvuu Lodge

Mvuu — the Chichewa word for hippo — sits exactly where you want to be in Liwonde: raised on timber decks directly above the Shire River, with the water and its traffic of hippo, elephant and waterbird as your constant companion. This is the beating heart of Malawi's greatest park, and the lodge's position turns ordinary afternoons into theatre. Elephants wade the shallows below the deck; fish eagles call across the channel; and the sunsets over the floodplain palms are among the finest in the country.

It is warm, unpretentious and deeply connected to place. Central African Wilderness Safaris has run Mvuu for decades, and the guiding, the conservation ethos and the easy Malawian welcome all show it. This is a lodge that lets the river do the talking.

The Rooms & Setting

Accommodation is a handful of thatched, open-fronted chalets and safari suites strung along the riverbank, each framed to the water. Interiors are cool and natural — canvas, timber and stone, netted four-poster beds, and private verandas where the day begins with coffee and the sight of elephants across the channel. A raised central lounge and dining area, a small pool and a campfire deck complete a camp built for slow, golden evenings.

Wildlife & Activities

The signature experience is the boat safari — low, silent and thrilling — gliding along the Shire past pods of hippo, basking crocodiles and elephants drinking at the edge. Game drives explore the floodplain and mopane woodland, where Liwonde's rewilded cast now includes lion, cheetah, black rhino, buffalo and one of Africa's densest elephant populations. Guided walks, superb birding (over 400 species) and night drives round out the days.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season (May to October) concentrates wildlife on the Shire and offers the classic Liwonde safari, with September and October the peak for big herds. The green season (November to April) brings dramatic skies, newborn animals and outstanding birding, and the river runs full and beautiful.
