Key Takeaways
  • A refined lakeside lodge inside Lake Malawi National Park — the world's first freshwater national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Ten spacious villas climb a forested hillside above the water, with an infinity pool that seems to pour into the lake.
  • Snorkelling, kayaking, sailing and boat trips over crystal water alive with jewel-coloured cichlid fish.
  • The perfect lakeside finale to a Liwonde or Majete bush safari — barefoot, warm and utterly relaxing.

Why Pumulani

After the dust and drama of the bush, Pumulani is the exhale. Set within Lake Malawi National Park — the first freshwater national park on earth and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — it occupies a private, forested bay where the only sounds are lapping water and fish eagles. Ten villas step up the hillside so each has its own sweeping view of the lake, and the infinity pool at the heart of the lodge appears to spill straight into the blue.

This is the lakeside half of the classic Malawi journey: the place where a safari becomes a holiday. Snorkel in the morning, sail at midday, and watch the sun sink into the Lake of Stars at night.

The Villas & Setting

The ten villas are generous and light, built of stone and canvas with soaring thatch, netted beds, and huge glass fronts framing the water. Private decks, indoor-outdoor bathrooms and cool interiors make them a pleasure to linger in. Down at the shore, a beach, a jetty, a dining pavilion and that infinity pool form the social heart of the lodge, all facing west for the sunsets.

Activities on the Lake

The water is the star. Snorkel or dive over rocky reefs teeming with the endemic cichlids that make Lake Malawi a wonder of evolution; kayak the shoreline; sail a dhow or catamaran; or take a sunset cruise with a drink in hand. There is stand-up paddleboarding, guided walks in the national park, and village and cultural visits nearby. It is as active or as restful as you wish.

Best Time to Visit

Lake Malawi is a year-round destination. The dry months (May to October) are warm, clear and calm — ideal for snorkelling and pairing with a bush safari. The green season (November to April) is warmer still, with dramatic skies and beautiful light; the lake stays inviting throughout.
