Key Takeaways
  • An intimate, eco-conscious tented camp on the edge of an ancient seasonal floodplain in Hwange National Park.
  • Famous for its elephant pool — herds drink at the plunge-pool deck within touching distance in the dry season.
  • Seven canvas suites with copper baths, star beds and a raised deck over the pan.
  • One of the best-value luxury camps in Hwange for elephant, lion, cheetah and sable.

Why Somalisa Camp

Somalisa is the camp everyone pictures when they imagine Hwange: canvas suites set beneath acacias on the edge of an ancient floodplain, with a plunge pool that doubles as a drinking trough for elephants. In the dry season, whole herds file in to drink at the deck — sometimes so close you can hear them breathe. It is the flagship of African Bush Camps, the owner-founded company built by Zimbabwean guide Beks Ndlovu, and it carries that founder's eye for wild, low-impact luxury.

For a first Hwange safari, or for repeat travellers who want elephants at eye level and genuinely warm Zimbabwean guiding, Somalisa is one of the most rewarding addresses in the park. It sits high on our shortlist of the best Zimbabwe safari lodges, and pairs beautifully with the wider Hwange National Park safari circuit.

The Suites & Setting

Seven light-filled canvas suites face the floodplain, each raised on a deck with a copper slipper bath, indoor and outdoor showers and a private view of the pan. The design is natural and uncluttered — canvas, timber and brass, cooled by the breeze off the plain. A central lounge and dining tent open to the deck, and the star attraction, the plunge pool, sits at the very edge of the waterhole. Star beds can be arranged for a night under the Milky Way. It is barefoot, elegant and deeply connected to the bush around it.

Hwange National Park — Zimbabwe's great elephant country.

Wildlife & Experiences

Hwange holds one of Africa's largest elephant populations, and Somalisa's floodplain is a magnet for them. Beyond elephant, expect lion, cheetah, spotted hyena, sable and roan antelope, buffalo and — with luck — wild dog. Game drives explore the pans and teak woodland, and guided walks bring the smaller detail of the bush to life. The camp's own waterhole and hide deliver superb sit-and-wait photography without leaving the deck. Night drives on the private-access areas add aardwolf, civet and porcupine to the list.

Best Time to Visit

The dry months of May to October are prime — water is scarce, and the pans and pools concentrate huge numbers of elephant and predators. September and October are the classic peak for the elephant pool. The green season (November to April) brings migrant birds, newborn antelope and lush scenery, with wildlife more dispersed but photography stunning.
