The dry winter months from May to September are the prime safari season - the bush thins out, animals gather at waterholes and Big Five sightings are at their best in the Kruger and Sabi Sands. The summer green season (November to March) is lush and superb for birding and newborn animals, though hotter and wetter. For the Cape, the warm, dry months of November to April are ideal, so many travellers pair a winter bush safari with a Cape visit in the shoulder seasons.

South Africa offers exceptional value. Budget and self-drive Kruger safaris start from around $150-250 per person per day. Mid-range private lodges run $350-700 per person per day, all-inclusive. The flagship Sabi Sands and Madikwe lodges range from $700 to $2,500+ per person per night, including game drives, meals and drinks. South Africa is arguably the most family-friendly safari country in Africa. Many reserves are malaria-free - Madikwe, Phinda, Pilanesberg and the Eastern Cape - and a wealth of lodges welcome children with dedicated family suites, junior ranger programmes and flexible game drives. Short transfers, excellent roads and direct flights make travelling with children easy and stress-free.

Absolutely - this is one of South Africa's greatest strengths. A short two-hour flight links the Kruger with Cape Town, so a classic itinerary pairs three or four nights of Big Five safari with time in the Mother City, the Cape Winelands and along the Garden Route. It's the perfect blend of wildlife, wine, mountains and coastline in a single, seamless trip.

For the bush alone, three or four nights in a private reserve is enough to see the Big Five in comfort. To combine a safari with Cape Town and the Winelands, allow 7 to 10 days. Two weeks lets you add the Garden Route, KwaZulu-Natal or a second reserve for a richer, more varied journey across the country's contrasting landscapes.

Much of South Africa's finest safari country is malaria-free. Madikwe, Pilanesberg, the Waterberg and the Eastern Cape reserves all offer full Big Five game viewing without any malaria risk, making them ideal for families with young children and travellers who prefer to avoid antimalarials. The Kruger and Sabi Sands are a low-risk malaria area, easily managed with simple precautions.

South Africa delivers the complete Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino - along with cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, hippo and hundreds of bird species. The Sabi Sands is world-renowned for relaxed, close leopard sightings, while reserves like Phinda add cheetah and both black and white rhino. The variety of habitats means every reserve offers a slightly different cast of wildlife.

In the private reserves, all game viewing is done in open 4x4 vehicles with a professional ranger and tracker included - you simply relax and enjoy. Self-driving is possible and popular in the main Kruger National Park, where sealed roads suit a normal car, but a guided safari in a private concession delivers off-road access, night drives and expert interpretation you cannot get on your own.
