The dry season from June to October is the peak time - wildlife concentrates along the Luangwa and Zambezi rivers, walking conditions are ideal, and leopard sightings are superb. September and October are the most productive but also the hottest. The emerald green season (November to April) transforms the landscape, brings spectacular birding and newborns, and offers lower rates, though some bush camps close in the wettest months.

A value Zambia safari with good bush camps starts from around $400-550 per person per day, all-inclusive. Mid-range and premium camps run $600-950 per person per night. Luxury South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi lodges range from $950 to $1,800+ per person per night, including guided walks, drives, meals and park fees. A typical 6-8 night Zambia safari costs $4,000-$13,000 per person depending on tier.

The walking safari as we know it was pioneered in South Luangwa by conservationist Norman Carr in the 1950s. Zambia's guides are trained to an exceptional standard, and walking remains at the heart of the Zambian safari experience. Reading tracks, approaching game on foot and understanding the smaller details of the bush make it the most immersive way to experience Africa.

A minimum of 5-6 nights lets you pair South Luangwa with the Lower Zambezi, Zambia's two signature areas. A week or more allows a richer circuit adding Kafue or a Victoria Falls finale at Livingstone. Because Zambia's camps are intimate and its game viewing rewards patience, we recommend at least three nights in each area.

Yes - Victoria Falls sits on Zambia's own doorstep at Livingstone, making it the natural start or finish to almost any Zambia safari. Many itineraries open at the Falls before flying to South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi. The Falls also link easily to Botswana's Chobe and the Okavango Delta for a multi-country journey.

South Luangwa delivers leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, endemic Thornicroft's giraffe and Crawshay's zebra, plus over 400 bird species. The Lower Zambezi adds superb elephant, wild dog and prolific hippo and crocodile along the river. Kafue's Busanga Plains offer lion, cheetah, and rare antelope like red lechwe and roan.
