Kafue

Where the Busanga Plains Reign

At 22,400 square kilometres, Kafue is Zambia's largest wilderness — a realm of golden floodplains, ancient miombo woodlands and slow, silver rivers. On the legendary Busanga Plains, red lechwe leap through shimmering channels, cheetahs sprint across open savannah and lions patrol at dawn. Fewer visitors come here in a year than Kruger receives in a day. This is Africa as it was a century ago — wild, elemental and yours alone.

Private guides, the finest plains and riverside camps, and every game drive, boat cruise and walking safari crafted entirely around you — the perfect way to experience Kafue's vast, untrodden wilderness.

The Beyond Africa Difference

We don't just take you to Kafue. We give you the whole wilderness to yourself.

Kafue National Park is Zambia's largest protected area and one of Africa's greatest untouched wildernesses. Established in 1924 and nearly the size of Wales, it ranges from ancient miombo woodlands in the south to the legendary Busanga Plains in the north — seasonal floodplains that emerge each dry season as a golden savannah teeming with life. Here you'll find Africa's highest antelope diversity, with 21 species from red lechwe and puku to majestic roan and sable. Big cats thrive: Busanga's famous lions hunt by day, cheetahs sprint across open grassland, and leopards haunt the riverine forests, while endangered wild dogs roam the woodlands. Yet what defines Kafue above all is its profound solitude — fewer than a few thousand visitors a year explore its vast expanse, meaning sightings are almost always yours alone. With a handful of intimate, seasonal camps set on tree islands and riverbanks, Kafue offers a safari of rare authenticity — remote, exclusive and gloriously wild.

Zambia's Wild Heart · The Busanga Plains

The Busanga Plains

Kafue is defined by the Busanga — a vast seasonal floodplain in the far north where the wet-season waters draw down to leave an ocean of golden grass. Red lechwe and puku gather in their thousands, cranes and storks work the shallows, and the famous Busanga lions hold court in the open, hunting by day across ground that few travellers ever reach. Drift the flooded channels by boat, float above the plains at sunrise in a balloon, and track cheetah and wild dog through country that stretches unbroken to the horizon. This is wild Zambia at its purest — remote, teeming and yours almost alone.

Useful Kafue Travel Tips

The practical details that make a safari effortless — gathered from years of crafting private Zambia itineraries for our guests.

Time it for Busanga

For the Busanga Plains at their finest — daytime lions and balloon flights — visit July to October. Book 6–12 months ahead for peak season.

Balloon flights book fast

Dawn hot-air balloon safaris over Busanga are limited and hugely popular — request one when you reserve your camp.

Light aircraft access

Camps are reached by charter flight from Lusaka. Pack soft bags (20kg limit) and leave hard-shell suitcases in Lusaka storage.

Night drives for cats

Kafue permits night drives — the best way to see leopard, genet, civet and other nocturnal hunters.

Malaria precautions

Kafue is a malaria area; take prophylaxis and use repellent. Yellow-fever vaccination is required for entry to Zambia.

Layer up for dawn

Dry-season mornings are chilly on open drives. Bring warm layers for early starts and sun protection for the midday heat.

Good to know

Kafue, Answered

What makes Kafue National Park special?

Kafue is Zambia's largest and one of Africa's wildest, most uncrowded national parks. Its crown jewel is the Busanga Plains — golden floodplains famous for daytime-hunting lions, cheetah coalitions and Africa's highest antelope diversity (21 species). With only a handful of intimate camps across 22,400 km², sightings here are almost always yours alone.

Is Kafue better than South Luangwa?

Different, not better. South Luangwa is famous for walking safaris and leopards, while Kafue is larger, more remote and offers the Busanga Plains spectacle — exceptional cheetah, lion and antelope diversity. Kafue feels wilder and less visited. Many serious safari-goers combine both parks.

When is the best time to visit the Busanga Plains?

July to October is peak season. The plains are dry and accessible, wildlife concentrations are highest, and predator activity is intense. Hot-air balloon safaris operate during this window. June offers excellent value, while September and October provide the driest conditions and maximum game density.

How do I get to Kafue National Park?

Fly into Lusaka, Zambia's capital, then connect on a light-aircraft charter (about 1.5 hours) to the Busanga Plains airstrips or to Lufupa in southern Kafue. Most lodges include these charter flights in their packages. We handle all flights, transfers and logistics smoothly.

Can I see the Big Five in Kafue?

Almost — Kafue has healthy numbers of lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo, but rhino are absent (they were poached to local extinction). Kafue more than compensates with exceptional cheetah, wild dog and unrivalled antelope diversity, plus superb river and walking safaris.

Is Kafue crowded?

No. Kafue receives only a few thousand visitors a year across 22,400 km², so you'll often have sightings entirely to yourself. This remoteness and exclusivity are central to its appeal — during peak season, Busanga camps coordinate to avoid vehicle congestion at sightings.

How many days should I spend in Kafue?

We recommend a minimum of 3 nights, ideally 4–5, to experience both the Busanga Plains and southern Kafue's riverine ecosystems — allowing time for game drives, walking safaris, boat trips and a hot-air balloon flight. Combine with South Luangwa or Lower Zambezi for a complete Zambia safari of 10–14 days.

Can I do a hot-air balloon safari in Kafue?

Yes. Hot-air balloon safaris over the Busanga Plains operate from July to October, and several camps include a complimentary flight for guests staying three or more nights in peak season. Floating over elephant herds and lion prides at dawn is one of Africa's most spectacular aerial safari experiences.
