Quirimbas Archipelago
Discover Quirimbas Archipelago
The Quirimbas Archipelago is Mozambique at its most wild and culturally rich — a chain of 32 coral islands stretching along the northern coast, where Swahili-Arab trading history, Portuguese colonial architecture, and pristine marine wilderness converge in one of the Indian Ocean's most remote and enchanting destinations.
Ibo Island — the archipelago's cultural heart — was once a thriving trading port where Arab dhow captains, Portuguese merchants, and African traders exchanged ivory, gold, and spices. Today, its crumbling colonial forts, silversmith workshops, and sand-street villages offer a window into centuries of Indian Ocean commerce that has left few traces elsewhere.
The diving and snorkelling in the Quirimbas rival Bazaruto, with the added element of remoteness. The reefs are pristine and uncrowded. Humpback whales migrate through the channel between June and November. Sea turtles nest on the beaches. And the luxury lodges — reached by boat or helicopter from Pemba — are among the most exclusive in Africa, with some accommodating as few as ten guests on an entire island.
