Discover Etosha National Park
Etosha is Namibia's answer to the Serengeti—a 22,270-square-kilometre national park dominated by a vast, shimmering salt pan visible from space, around whose edges some of the most concentrated wildlife viewing in southern Africa takes place. The Etosha Pan itself—a flat, white, seemingly lifeless expanse of 4,760 square kilometres—is the remnant of a great lake that dried up millions of years ago. During the dry season, heat mirages transform the pan's surface into a trembling silver lake that appears to hover above the earth.
The park's genius lies in its waterholes. A network of natural springs and artificial pumps creates oasis points around the pan's perimeter, and during the dry months (May to November) these become stages for an ever-rotating cast of wildlife. A single waterhole vigil might yield elephant, giraffe, black rhino, zebra, springbok, gemsbok, blue wildebeest, lion, and jackal—all within a two-hour sitting. The floodlit waterholes at Okaukuejo and Halali rest camps provide nocturnal viewing from the comfort of a stone wall, where black rhino regularly drink within twenty metres of wide-eyed guests.
Etosha is one of the best places in Africa to see the critically endangered black rhinoceros—the park shelters one of the largest free-roaming populations on the continent. Lion are abundant across the savannah, and the park's cheetah and leopard populations, though more elusive, reward patient observers. During the wet season, flamingos colonise the shallow pans in their tens of thousands, painting the white surface pink.
Unlike many African parks, Etosha is accessible by sedan vehicle on well-maintained gravel roads, making it ideal for self-drive itineraries. For those preferring guided luxury, private concessions on Etosha's eastern and southern boundaries offer exclusive traversing rights, night drives, and walking safaris unavailable within the public park.
