Indian Ocean Island Paradise
Five pristine islands ringed by turquoise water, coral reefs and towering dunes within a protected marine national park. Snorkel and dive crystal-clear seas, sail traditional dhows into the sunset, search for rare dugongs, and retire to barefoot beach villas with private pools. Bazaruto is the perfect Indian Ocean finale to an African safari — and a paradise in its own right.
The Bazaruto Archipelago is the jewel of the Mozambican coast — a chain of five idyllic islands set in a protected marine national park, ringed by coral reefs, sweeping white beaches and towering golden dunes. The water here is among the clearest and warmest in the Indian Ocean, alive with tropical fish, turtles, manta rays and the archipelago's famous dugongs, which shelter in these waters as one of the last viable populations in East Africa. Seasonal whale sharks and humpback whales add to the spectacle. Yet Bazaruto is as much about serenity as it is about marine life. Days drift by between reef and beach, dhow and dune, spa and sundowner. Traditional sailing dhows carry you to deserted sandbanks for gourmet picnics; coral gardens reveal themselves on every snorkel; and barefoot luxury awaits at exclusive island retreats such as &Beyond Benguerra Island and Azura Benguerra, where hand-built villas come with private pools and personal hosts. As the perfect beach finale to a Big Five safari, or as a romantic island escape in its own right, Bazaruto delivers the Indian Ocean at its most beautiful and unspoilt.

As the afternoon softens, you step aboard a traditional wooden dhow and set sail across water so clear it seems to glow. The sail fills, the archipelago drifts by, and your captain anchors at a deserted sandbank where a table of chilled champagne and fresh seafood awaits. You snorkel coral gardens, walk barefoot on untouched sand, and sail home as the sky turns to copper and rose. It is the most romantic experience on the Mozambican coast — and uniquely Bazaruto.

Sail a traditional wooden dhow across the archipelago's turquoise water to deserted sandbanks and the towering dunes of Bazaruto Island, with snorkelling stops and a gourmet beach picnic. The signature, and most romantic, experience of the coast.

Snorkel the archipelago's vibrant coral reefs, alive with tropical fish, turtles and rays in some of the clearest water in the Indian Ocean. Easy, accessible and utterly mesmerising for all ages.

Dive the famed Two Mile Reef and the archipelago's pristine dive sites, home to manta rays, turtles, reef sharks, dolphins and the chance of seasonal whale sharks. PADI courses available for beginners.

Bazaruto shelters one of East Africa's last dugong populations. Set out by boat in search of these gentle 'sea cows', along with dolphins, turtles and, in season, whale sharks and humpback whales.

Unwind in barefoot luxury — a couples' spa treatment overlooking the ocean, long lazy hours by your private pool, and sunset walks along untouched white-sand beaches. Pure island serenity.

The waters off Bazaruto offer world-class game fishing for marlin, sailfish, tuna and dorado. Head out with experienced skippers on a catch-and-release adventure in one of the Indian Ocean's great fishing grounds.
Handpicked luxury lodges ranging from award-winning ultra-luxury suites to exceptional value properties — every lodge delivers a world-class safari experience.

The only resort on Bazaruto Island itself — 44 villas along a private beach inside the marine national park, with world-class diving and the archipelago's last dugong herds at your doorstep.

Bazaruto offers a rare combination of pristine marine wilderness, easy safari pairing and barefoot luxury — here's how it compares.
Sunny skies, calm seas and excellent visibility for snorkelling and diving — the ideal time to visit the archipelago.
Hot days, the calmest seas and the best underwater visibility of the year — superb for diving and dhow sailing.
Hot and humid with occasional tropical downpours, but quieter beaches and warm water. Cyclone risk is low but possible.
Fly into Vilanculos — directly from Johannesburg or via Maputo — then transfer to your island by a short boat ride or scenic helicopter flight. Bazaruto is just a short light-aircraft hop from the Kruger and Sabi Sand, making it the perfect Indian Ocean finale to a Big Five safari. We arrange all flights and transfers seamlessly, door to door.
The Bazaruto Archipelago is a chain of five islands off the coast of southern Mozambique, within the Inhambane Province, protected as a national marine park since 1971. The gateway is the mainland town of Vilanculos, reached by direct flights from Johannesburg or via Maputo, with a short boat or helicopter transfer to the islands.
April to November (the dry season) offers sunny skies, calm seas and excellent underwater visibility. October and November bring the calmest seas and best diving conditions, while June to October is prime time for whale sharks and migrating humpback whales. The green season (December to March) is hotter and more humid with occasional rain.
Absolutely — this is one of the most popular ways to visit. Bazaruto is just a short light-aircraft flight from the Kruger and Sabi Sand, making it the ideal Indian Ocean finale to a Big Five safari. Our 10-day Beach & Safari Ultimate itinerary combines both perfectly, and we can pair the islands with any Southern African safari.
Bazaruto is a marine paradise, home to one of East Africa's last dugong populations, plus manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins and vibrant coral-reef fish year-round. Whale sharks and migrating humpback whales appear seasonally between June and October. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the archipelago is one of the region's great marine hotspots.
Not at all. The reefs snorkel beautifully and are accessible to all ages and abilities, and there is plenty to do beyond diving — dhow sailing, kayaking, fishing and beach time. For those who wish to dive, PADI courses are available at the island lodges, from beginner to advanced.
Yes, coastal Mozambique is a malaria zone, so anti-malarial prophylaxis is recommended — consult your doctor four to six weeks before travel. The lodges provide mosquito nets, repellent and well-screened rooms, and the sea breeze on the islands helps keep mosquitoes at bay.
We recommend a minimum of four to five nights to relax fully and enjoy the archipelago's activities, though a week allows for a truly unhurried island experience. As a safari finale, three to four nights is a perfect way to unwind after the bush.
&Beyond Benguerra Island and Azura Benguerra are the flagship eco-luxury retreats, with private-pool villas and personal service. Bazaruto Island Lodge offers excellent value with spectacular views, while Vilanculos Beach Lodge is a great-value mainland gateway. We'll match the perfect lodge to your style and budget.
