Difficulty varies — treks can last from one to several hours over steep, muddy and forested terrain at altitude. Gorilla families are at different distances and you are matched to a group suiting your fitness. A reasonable level of fitness helps, and hiring a porter (highly recommended) makes the trek much easier and supports the local community.
The drier seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the easiest trekking conditions, though gorillas are tracked year-round. The rainy seasons bring muddier trails but lush scenery, fewer visitors and a greater chance of permit availability.
