Mountain Gorillas in the Land of a Thousand Hills
Trek through misty bamboo forests on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes to sit, breathless, just metres from a wild mountain gorilla family. Rwanda pairs the world's most moving wildlife encounter with Africa's most exclusive lodges and a remarkable story of renewal. This is the ultimate primate journey — intimate, emotional and utterly unforgettable.
Volcanoes National Park, on the Rwandan slopes of the Virunga Massif, is one of the last refuges of the endangered mountain gorilla — and the most luxurious place on Earth to meet them. Trekking through dense bamboo and Afro-montane forest, accompanied by expert trackers, you spend a precious, permit-protected hour just metres from a wild gorilla family: a silverback resting in the undergrowth, mothers cradling infants, youngsters tumbling at play. It is, for almost everyone who experiences it, the single most moving wildlife encounter of their lives. This is also the land where Dian Fossey carried out her pioneering research, and her legacy of conservation endures in one of Africa's great success stories. Beyond the gorillas, you can trek to rare golden monkeys, hike to Fossey's research camp, and immerse yourself in Rwanda's remarkable culture and its inspiring story of renewal. Easy access via Kigali — barely a two-hour drive away — and the presence of the finest gorilla lodges on the continent, from Bisate to Singita Kwitonda and One&Only Gorilla's Nest, make Rwanda the definitive luxury primate destination.
Gorilla permits cost $1,500 and Rwanda's lodges are among the most exclusive in Africa — here is exactly what that premium delivers.
An hour with a wild mountain gorilla family is, for almost everyone, the most profound wildlife experience of their lives — and there are only around 1,000 of these great apes left on Earth.
Just two hours from Kigali, you trek through bamboo forest on the slopes of dormant volcanoes — spectacular, accessible and unforgettable.
Bisate, Singita Kwitonda and One&Only Gorilla's Nest set a standard of luxury found nowhere else in the gorilla world — volcanic-view suites, butlers and fine dining.
Your permit directly funds gorilla protection and community development — mountain gorilla numbers are now rising, one of Africa's great conservation triumphs.
Golden monkey trekking, the Dian Fossey hike, and Rwanda's rich culture make this far more than a single encounter.

For one permit-protected hour, you share their world. Almost no one returns unchanged.

Both Rwanda and Uganda offer mountain gorillas — here's how Rwanda's experience compares.
The most popular time to trek, with drier trails and easier forest conditions. Book gorilla permits well in advance.
A second excellent window with good trekking conditions and lush scenery between the rains.
Wetter and muddier trails, but gorillas are tracked year-round, lodges are quieter and the forest is gloriously green.
Rwanda is one of the most accessible gorilla destinations in Africa. Fly into Kigali International Airport — well connected via Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Doha and Brussels — then enjoy a scenic two-to-three-hour drive through the terraced 'Land of a Thousand Hills' to Volcanoes National Park. Helicopter transfers are also available. Rwanda pairs superbly with a Kenyan or Tanzanian safari, or with Uganda's primates.
A gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda costs USD $1,500 per person and includes park entry, expert trackers and guides, and your permit-protected hour with a gorilla family. Permits are strictly limited and in high demand, so we recommend booking several months in advance. The fee directly funds gorilla conservation and community development.
Difficulty varies — treks can last from one to several hours over steep, muddy and forested terrain at altitude. Gorilla families are at different distances and you are matched to a group suiting your fitness. A reasonable level of fitness helps, and hiring a porter (highly recommended) makes the trek much easier and supports the local community.
The drier seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the easiest trekking conditions, though gorillas are tracked year-round. The rainy seasons bring muddier trails but lush scenery, fewer visitors and a greater chance of permit availability.
A minimum of three days allows for one gorilla trek, but we recommend four to five days to enjoy two treks, golden monkey trekking, the Dian Fossey hike and Rwandan culture. Rwanda also combines beautifully with a Kenyan, Tanzanian or Ugandan safari.
Rwanda is home to the finest gorilla lodges on Earth — Bisate, Singita Kwitonda and One&Only Gorilla's Nest — offering volcanic-view suites, private pools, world-class spas and butler service. No other gorilla destination matches this concentration of ultra-luxury, which is a key reason discerning travellers choose Rwanda.
Yes. Rwanda is widely regarded as one of the safest and cleanest countries in Africa, with excellent infrastructure, friendly people and a remarkable story of recovery and renewal. Tourism is well organised and the welcome is genuinely warm.
The minimum age to trek mountain gorillas in Rwanda is 15 years. Younger families can still enjoy golden monkey trekking, cultural experiences and the country's scenic beauty.
Absolutely. Rwanda pairs beautifully with a classic Big Five safari in Kenya or Tanzania, with Uganda's chimpanzees and savannah wildlife, or with a beach finale in Zanzibar or Mozambique. We design seamless multi-country itineraries.
