The Birthplace of the Walking Safari
Track lion and elephant on foot through one of Africa's last great wildernesses, where the walking safari was born. By day, follow leopard spoor with legendary guides; by night, spotlit drives reveal the valley's famed nocturnal hunters. South Luangwa is raw, intimate, uncrowded Africa — and one of the finest big-cat destinations on the continent.
South Luangwa is where the walking safari was born, and it remains one of Africa's most authentic and rewarding wildernesses. The Luangwa River — the lifeblood of the valley — carves through a landscape of oxbow lagoons, ebony groves and open plains that support an astonishing density of wildlife. This is leopard country par excellence, with one of the highest concentrations of the elusive cats anywhere on Earth, alongside large prides of lion, endangered African wild dog, vast elephant herds and over 400 bird species. What sets the Luangwa apart is the experience: pioneering walking safaris led by some of the continent's most respected guides, thrilling night drives that reveal the valley's nocturnal hunters, and intimate bush camps that place you deep within the wilderness. Uncrowded, unspoilt and gloriously wild, South Luangwa offers safari in its purest form — yet wrapped in genuine riverside luxury at lodges such as Time + Tide Chinzombo and Mchenja. It is a destination for those who want their Africa real, immersive and unforgettable.

There is nothing quite like tracking Africa's great game on foot. Led by a senior guide and an armed national-park scout, you read the bush as the old hands do — following lion spoor in the sand, approaching elephant on the wind, learning the stories told by tracks, dung and birdsong. South Luangwa is where this art was born, and its walking guides remain unmatched. It is safari stripped to its purest, most exhilarating form.

With over 400 species, the Luangwa is a birding paradise. In the dry season, thousands of jewel-bright carmine bee-eaters nest in the riverbanks, creating one of Africa's great ornithological spectacles, while fish eagles, storks and herons line the river.

The Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons teem with life. Watch enormous pods of hippo, basking crocodiles and elephant herds crossing the shallows, with superb photographic opportunities as the light turns golden over the water.

South Luangwa offers a wilder, more intimate and more authentic safari than the big-name parks — here's how it stacks up.
Wildlife concentrates along the river, walking conditions are ideal and the famous carmine bee-eaters arrive — the classic Luangwa experience.
Very hot but spectacular game viewing as animals crowd the shrinking water sources, with dramatic predator action.
Lush, dramatic and quiet, with superb birding and newborn animals. Some camps close and roads can be limited, but the valley is stunning.
Most travellers fly into Lusaka, then connect on a short scheduled flight to Mfuwe Airport, the gateway to South Luangwa. From Mfuwe, camps are reached by a 30–90 minute road transfer, often a game drive in itself. The valley pairs beautifully with Victoria Falls, the Lower Zambezi and Malawi's lakeshore.
South Luangwa is the birthplace of the walking safari — the concept was pioneered here in the 1960s by the legendary conservationist Norman Carr. Today its walking guides are among the most experienced and respected on the continent. Every walk is led by a senior guide accompanied by an armed national-park scout, allowing you to track big game on foot in complete safety. It is the most intimate and thrilling way to experience the African bush.
Exceptionally so. The valley has one of the highest leopard densities anywhere in Africa, and sightings are frequent both by day and — uniquely — on the park's celebrated spotlit night drives. For many visitors, the leopard viewing here is the best they experience anywhere on the continent.
The dry season from May to October is ideal, when wildlife concentrates along the river, walking conditions are perfect and the spectacular carmine bee-eater colonies arrive. October is very hot but offers extraordinary game viewing. The green (emerald) season from December to April is lush and quiet, with superb birding, though some camps close.
Yes, the Luangwa Valley is a malaria zone, so anti-malarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended — consult your doctor four to six weeks before travel. All camps provide mosquito nets, repellent and well-screened rooms.
Fly into Lusaka, Zambia's capital, then connect on a short scheduled flight to Mfuwe Airport, the gateway to the park. From Mfuwe, your camp is reached by a 30–90 minute road transfer. We arrange all flights and transfers seamlessly.
Absolutely — South Luangwa pairs beautifully with Victoria Falls and the Lower Zambezi for a complete Zambian safari, or with a beach finale in Mozambique or Zanzibar. We handle all regional flights and logistics.
A moderate level of fitness is helpful, but walks are tailored to the group and are generally gentle — focused on tracking and interpretation rather than covering long distances. Drives are always available as an alternative or complement.
South Luangwa offers exceptional leopard, large lion prides, vast elephant and buffalo herds, endangered African wild dog, hippo, crocodile and the endemic Thornicroft's giraffe, plus over 400 bird species. Rhino are not present, so it is a Big Four rather than Big Five destination — but the quality of predator viewing is among the finest in Africa.
