The dry season from May to October is the prime time for wildlife, as animals concentrate around Etosha's waterholes and the weather is clear and mild. For Sossusvlei, the cooler months of May to September give the most comfortable dune climbing and the crispest light. The green season (November to April) brings dramatic skies, newborn animals and superb photography, with far fewer visitors and lower rates.

A self-drive Namibia safari with mid-range guesthouses starts from around $200-300 per person per day including a 4x4. Guided road safaris with quality lodges run $350-600 per person per day. Namibia is widely considered the best self-drive safari country in Africa. Roads are quiet and well-signposted, the gravel is generally in good condition, and distances between lodges are manageable with a reliable 4x4. Self-driving gives you total freedom over your Sossusvlei sunrise or Etosha waterhole timings. That said, many travellers combine self-drive stretches with a fly-in leg to reach the remote north-west without the long drives.

A minimum of 7 nights lets you pair Sossusvlei with Etosha, the country's two signature regions. Ten to twelve days is ideal, adding Damaraland's desert-adapted wildlife or the eerie Skeleton Coast. Because Namibia's distances are vast, we recommend either flying between the highlights or building in relaxed driving days rather than rushing.

Etosha delivers elephant, lion, leopard, black rhino, giraffe, zebra and huge herds of springbok and oryx around its waterholes. Damaraland is famous for desert-adapted elephant and free-roaming black rhino, tracked on foot or by vehicle.
