For wildlife, the long dry season — May to October — is best: Etosha's waterholes draw huge numbers of animals to a few visible points. For dramatic dune photography and cooler desert travel, the same window works. The short green season (January to April) brings rain, birds, newborns and greener scenery, and is quieter and better value.
May to October — the dry season
This is prime time. As the land dries, Etosha's wildlife concentrates around its famous waterholes, making game viewing almost theatrical — you simply wait at a waterhole and the animals come to you. Days are warm and clear, nights cold, and rainfall is essentially nil. It is the busiest window, especially July to September, so book lodges early.
Sossusvlei and the desert circuit
Namibia's iconic red dunes at Sossusvlei, the ghostly Deadvlei, Damaraland's desert-adapted elephants and rhino, and the eerie Skeleton Coast are best explored in the cooler dry months. Early morning light on the dunes is unforgettable. Summer (December–February) is very hot in the desert, so dawn starts are essential if you travel then.
January to April — the green season
The short rains transform Namibia: the desert can bloom, waterholes scatter (so wildlife disperses in Etosha), migrant birds arrive, and the scenery turns green and photogenic. Skies are dramatic and prices lower. It is a wonderful time for landscape photographers and birders who do not mind that game viewing is a little harder.
A self-drive and fly-in country
Namibia's excellent roads and safety make it Africa's premier self-drive safari, and the dry season is by far the easiest time to drive. Fly-in safaris link the remote highlights — Sossusvlei, the Skeleton Coast, Damaraland — quickly and are superb year-round. Distances are vast, so most itineraries need at least eight to ten days.
Best months for specific goals
For Etosha's waterhole game viewing, go June to October. For dune photography in comfort, go May to September. For green landscapes and birding, go January to April. For the best value and fewest crowds, travel in the green season or the April/November shoulders.
| Months | Season | Etosha wildlife | Crowds & price | Best for |
