When to Visit Zimbabwe for Safari: Month-by-Month (2026)

The classic window is the dry season, May to October, when Hwange's elephants crowd the waterholes and Mana Pools opens for its famous walking and canoeing safaris. Victoria Falls shifts from full flood (March–May) to lower, clearer water (September–December). The green season (November–April) is lush, bird-rich and quiet, though some camps close.

May to October — the dry-season peak

As water dries up, Hwange's pumped waterholes draw enormous elephant herds and a supporting cast of predators — some of the best elephant viewing anywhere. Days are warm and clear, nights cold early on, and September–October is hot but intense. Mana Pools reaches its walking and canoeing prime in these months, with superb light and famous under-the-trees elephant encounters.

Hwange and Mana Pools

Hwange is Zimbabwe's flagship — vast, elephant-rich and superbly guided. Mana Pools, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Zambezi, is one of the only parks where you can walk unguided (with a licensed guide) and canoe among hippos and elephants. Both peak in the dry months; Mana in particular is best from July to October.

Victoria Falls — timing the water

On Zimbabwe's side you get the widest, most panoramic views of the Falls. Peak flow (March–May) is thunderous and misty; low water (September–December) reveals the rock face and is best for photography and activities. Zimbabwe's viewpoints see the Falls beautifully year-round, so pair the visit with whichever safari season suits you.

Why Zimbabwe's guiding matters

Zimbabwe's professional guides are widely regarded as the best-trained in Africa, which makes walking safaris here exceptional and safe. This is a country for the traveller who wants depth — expert-led walks, canoeing, and genuine wilderness — usually at better value than its neighbours. The dry season maximises walking conditions and wildlife density.

Best months for specific goals

For Hwange's elephants, go August to October. For Mana Pools walking and canoeing, go July to October. For Victoria Falls in flood, go March to May. For clear Falls views and activities, go September to December. For birding and value, go November to April.
