Discover Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is the unsung hero of Tanzania's northern circuit—a park of extraordinary beauty that is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours but delivers experiences every bit as memorable. During the dry season (June–October), the Tarangire River becomes a magnet for wildlife, drawing some of the largest elephant concentrations in northern Tanzania—herds of 300 or more moving through cathedral-like groves of ancient baobab trees.

The landscape is Tarangire's defining feature. Massive baobab trees—some over a thousand years old—punctuate the savannah like natural sculptures, their swollen trunks and gnarled branches creating silhouettes that are quintessentially African. Tree-climbing pythons drape themselves across branches, while huge flocks of yellow-collared lovebirds flash through the canopy.

For the traveller seeking depth over breadth, Tarangire rewards extended stays. Walking safaris through the baobab forests, night drives for lesser-known nocturnal species, and fly-camping in remote corners of the park deliver an intimacy that the busier Serengeti sometimes cannot.
