Discover Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara is a jewel of biodiversity compressed into just 330 square kilometres—a park so richly varied that Ernest Hemingway called it 'the loveliest I had seen in Africa.' The park descends from the Great Rift Valley escarpment through groundwater forest, acacia woodland, and open grassland to the shores of a shallow alkaline lake that periodically turns pink with hundreds of thousands of flamingos.

Lake Manyara's most famous residents are its tree-climbing lions—a behavioural anomaly that sees prides hauling themselves into the branches of mahogany and sausage trees, where they drape over limbs like oversized house cats. The behaviour is not fully understood, but theories range from escaping tsetse flies to gaining vantage points for spotting prey.

The park's compact size makes it ideal for half-day game drives, and it pairs beautifully with Tarangire and Ngorongoro in a northern circuit itinerary.
