The dry seasons (late June to October and January to February) offer the best game viewing in Kenya. The Great Migration reaches the Masai Mara between July and October, when the dramatic Mara River crossings take place. The green seasons (March to May and November) bring lush scenery, newborn animals, excellent birding, fewer crowds, and lower rates.

A budget Kenya safari (group tours, basic camps) starts from around $200-300 per person per day. Mid-range lodges and tented camps run $350-650 per person per night, all-inclusive. Luxury Masai Mara conservancy camps range from $700 to $1,800+ per person per night, including game drives, meals, and often flights. A typical 5-7 night Kenya safari costs $2,000-$9,000 per person depending on the camp tier.

The Masai Mara National Reserve and its surrounding conservancies are the place to witness the Great Migration in Kenya. Between July and October, over a million wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River in dramatic, predator-charged crossings. Staying in a private conservancy bordering the reserve gives you migration access with far fewer vehicles and off-road game viewing.

A minimum of 4-5 nights is ideal for a meaningful Kenya safari. This lets you combine two contrasting areas - for example the Masai Mara with Amboseli or Samburu. A week allows a richer circuit through the Rift Valley, and 10 days lets you add a Tanzania extension or a Kenyan coast beach finale in Diani or Watamu.

National reserves like the Masai Mara are government-managed, open to all vehicles, and keep to strict on-road rules. Private conservancies border the reserves, cap the number of camps and vehicles, and allow off-road driving, night drives, and walking safaris. Conservancies deliver a more exclusive, lower-density experience while supporting local Maasai communities and wildlife corridors.

Kenya's safari areas are well-established and safe when travelling with a reputable operator. Most safari regions are in malaria zones, so antimalarial prophylaxis is recommended - consult your doctor. Higher-altitude areas like Laikipia carry lower risk. Both share the same Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Kenya offers easier logistics, excellent value in the Mara conservancies, and diverse parks close together. Tanzania offers the vast Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, and a more remote wilderness feel. Many travellers combine both across the border for the ultimate East African safari.

Yes - the bush-and-beach combination is one of Kenya's signature journeys. After your safari, a short flight reaches the Indian Ocean coast at Diani, Watamu, or Lamu, where white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and boutique resorts await. Three to four safari nights followed by three beach nights makes a superb honeymoon or family holiday.

Kenya delivers the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino) plus cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, and huge herds of wildebeest and zebra. Amboseli is famous for big-tusked elephants beneath Kilimanjaro, Samburu for rare northern species like Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe, and Lake Nakuru for flamingos and rhinos. Birdlife exceeds 1,000 species nationwide.

Both work well. Road safaris in comfortable 4x4s are cost-effective and let you see the landscapes between parks. Fly-in safaris using light aircraft save hours of driving and are ideal for combining distant areas like the Masai Mara, Samburu, and the coast. Many itineraries mix the two - driving nearby circuits and flying the longer legs.
