The Serengeti and the Masai Mara are, in truth, one vast ecosystem divided by the Kenya–Tanzania border. Both are home to the Great Migration, both offer some of the finest big-cat viewing on earth, and both are bucket-list icons. So which should you choose? It comes down to scale versus intimacy, cost, crowds, and — crucially — the time of year you can travel. Here is our honest, side-by-side comparison.
The Serengeti: scale and the full migration story
Tanzania's Serengeti is enormous — roughly fifteen times the size of the Mara — and hosts the migration for most of the year, including the January–March calving season on the southern plains and the dramatic river crossings from around June. Its sheer scale means space, remoteness and a sense of endless wilderness. It pairs beautifully with the Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar.
The Masai Mara: intimacy, density and big cats
Kenya's Mara is far smaller but astonishingly concentrated — the densest big-cat viewing in Africa, easy to reach, and framed by the Maasai culture. The migration is here roughly July to October, when the famous Mara River crossings occur. The private conservancies bordering the reserve add night drives, walking and low vehicle numbers.
The migration: timing is everything
Both share the migration, but at different times. For the calving season and southern plains, choose the Serengeti (Jan–Mar). For the classic Mara River crossings, either works from July to October — the Serengeti's northern sector or the Mara itself. The herds move constantly, so the right choice depends entirely on when you go.
Cost, access and crowds
Kenya's Mara is generally easier and quicker to reach and can be slightly better value; Tanzania's Serengeti involves more internal flying but rewards you with scale and space. The Mara's national reserve can get busy at crossings — the conservancies solve this. In the Serengeti, going remote (north or south) avoids the central crowds.
| Factor | Serengeti (Tanzania) | Masai Mara (Kenya) |
|---|---|---|
| Size | ~15,000 km², vast | ~1,500 km² + conservancies |
| Migration timing | Year-round; calving Jan–Mar | Jul–Oct river crossings |
| Big cats | Exceptional | Exceptional (densest) |
| Crowds | Spread out; remote areas quiet | Reserve busy; conservancies quiet |
| Access | More internal flights | Quicker, easier |
| Pairs with | Ngorongoro, Zanzibar | Amboseli, coast, conservancies |
Our verdict
For the calving season, sheer scale and a grand Tanzanian circuit with Zanzibar, choose the Serengeti. For the densest big cats, easiest access, the classic July–October crossings and the intimacy of a private conservancy, choose the Masai Mara. Better still, the truly wildlife-obsessed combine both — and we design that trip regularly.
