Lake Nakuru & The Great Rift Valley

Lake Nakuru lies in the Great Rift Valley of central Kenya, about a three-hour drive from Nairobi. It is famous worldwide for the flamingos that gather on its alkaline waters, at times turning the shoreline pink, and as one of Kenya's most important rhino sanctuaries, where both black and white rhino are seen with unusual reliability, along with endangered Rothschild's giraffe, lion and abundant birdlife.

Flamingos are a highlight of Lake Nakuru, but their numbers vary with the lake's water level and algae. In good years hundreds of thousands gather in a spectacular pink band along the shore; when water levels rise, many move to nearby soda lakes such as Bogoria. Even in quieter periods, thousands of pelicans, storks and other waterbirds line the shore, so the birdlife is rewarding year-round.

Yes — it is one of the best places in Kenya for rhino. As a fenced sanctuary, Lake Nakuru protects healthy numbers of both black and white rhino, and sightings are more reliable here than in almost any other park. Combined with Rothschild's giraffe, lion, leopard, buffalo and waterbuck, it offers an exceptional density of wildlife within a compact, easily explored park.

Nearby freshwater Lake Naivasha offers boat safaris among hippos and a walk on Crescent Island among giraffe and zebra; Hell's Gate National Park lets you cycle and walk among wildlife through dramatic gorges; and Lake Bogoria has steaming geysers, hot springs and often huge flamingo flocks. The Rift Valley escarpment viewpoints and geothermal scenery add to a region rich in variety.

The dry seasons from June to October and January to March offer the best game viewing, firm tracks and pleasant weather. The wetter months bring lush scenery, dramatic skies and often more flamingos as the lakes fill, though tracks can become muddy. The region's highland altitude keeps temperatures comfortable year-round, making it a rewarding stop in any season.

Yes — Hell's Gate is one of the very few national parks in Africa where you can explore on foot and by bicycle, because it has no large predators roaming freely in the main area. You can cycle past zebra, giraffe, buffalo and gazelle beneath towering red cliffs, then walk into the dramatic gorge with a ranger. It is a thrilling, active contrast to a conventional game drive.

The malaria risk around Lake Nakuru and the higher Rift Valley is lower than in lowland parks because of the altitude, but precautions are still advisable, especially around the lakes.
