The classic window is May to October, the dry season, which is also — counterintuitively — when the Okavango Delta floods, drawing spectacular concentrations of wildlife onto the shrinking dry land. July to September is the peak. The green summer (November to March) is quieter, cheaper, wonderful for birds and newborns, and increasingly rewarding as the bush comes alive.
The Okavango flood — Botswana's great paradox
Rain that falls in the Angolan highlands takes months to arrive, so the Delta floods during Botswana's dry season, usually peaking between June and August. As surrounding water sources vanish, animals funnel toward the Delta's channels — and mokoro (dugout canoe) and boat safaris come into their own. This flood timing is the single most important thing to understand about Botswana.
May to October — the dry-season peak
This is prime time: thin bush, the flood at its height, huge elephant herds along the Chobe and Linyanti, and superb predator action. Days are warm and dry, nights cold. It is the busiest and most expensive window, and the Delta's limited camp beds sell out a year ahead, so book early.
Chobe and Linyanti in the dry
The Chobe riverfront holds some of the largest elephant concentrations on earth in the dry months, best explored by boat. Linyanti and Selinda offer wild-dog country and predator drama with very few vehicles. September and October are hot but deliver the most intense game viewing of the year around the last remaining water.
November to March — the green season
The rains bring an explosion of life: migrant birds, newborn impala and zebra, and the Kalahari's Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans burst into a zebra migration and flamingo spectacle. Game is more dispersed and some Delta camps close, but rates fall sharply and the light for photography is glorious. This is Botswana for the second-time visitor and the budget-conscious.
Best months for specific goals
For the Delta flood and mokoro safaris, go June to August. For Chobe's elephant spectacle, go August to October. For the Kalahari zebra migration and birding, go December to March. For the best value, travel in the green season or the November/April shoulders.
