The Makgadikgadi Pans

The Makgadikgadi Pans are what remains when an ancient super-lake the size of Switzerland evaporates over millennia—a vast, blindingly white expanse of salt and silence that stretches to every horizon. Standing at the centre of Ntwetwe Pan, you occupy a landscape so featureless that the curvature of the earth becomes perceptible. It is disorienting, humbling, and utterly unlike any other experience in African travel.

During the dry season, the pans are a surreal, lunar landscape—cracked salt crusts extending in geometric patterns beneath skies so clear that the Milky Way casts shadows. When the rains arrive in November, the pans undergo one of Africa's most dramatic seasonal transformations. Shallow water covers the salt, attracting one of the continent's last great ungulate migrations—up to 25,000 zebra and wildebeest moving across the grasslands in search of fresh grazing. Greater and lesser flamingos arrive in their tens of thousands, turning the pans pink. The endemic brown hyena patrols the margins, and meerkats pop up from their burrows in the calcrete ridges that border the salt.
