The classic window is the dry season, May to October, when South Luangwa's walking safaris are at their finest and wildlife concentrates along the rivers. The emerald (green) season, December to April, is lush, bird-rich and superb value, though many bush camps close. Victoria Falls water levels shift dramatically through the year, which affects what you see.
May to October — the walking-safari season
As the bush dries, animals gather along the Luangwa and Zambezi rivers, and Zambia's legendary walking safaris come into their own — this is where the guided walk was invented. June to August is comfortable and dry; September and October are hot but deliver the most dramatic game viewing of the year around the shrinking water. Nights are cold early in the season.
South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi
South Luangwa is one of Africa's great leopard destinations and the spiritual home of walking safaris. The Lower Zambezi adds canoeing beneath the escarpment and superb river-based game viewing. Both are at their best in the dry months, when predators are active and the riverbanks throng with wildlife.
Victoria Falls — timing the water
The Falls change character through the year. Peak flow (around March to May, after the rains) is thunderous, misty and awe-inspiring — but the spray can obscure the view. Lower water (September to December) reveals the rock face and allows swimming in the Devil's Pool. There is no wrong time; it depends whether you want raw power or clear views.
The emerald season — December to April
The rains bring an explosion of green, superb birding (including migrants), newborn animals and dramatic skies. Some camps close and roads become tricky, but a few specialist camps offer boat-based and photographic safaris that are magical and excellent value. This is Zambia for the seasoned safari-goer seeking something different.

For walking safaris, go June to October. For peak predator and leopard viewing, go September to October. For Victoria Falls in full flood, go March to May. For the Devil's Pool and clear Falls views, go September to December. For birding and value, go December to April.
