Liuwa Plain National Park
Discover Liuwa Plain National Park
Liuwa Plain is Zambia's most remote and least-known safari destination — a vast, treeless grassland in the far west that hosts Africa's second-largest wildebeest migration. Each November, approximately 45,000 blue wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of other antelope converge on the plains after the first rains, creating a spectacle that rivals the Serengeti in drama if not in scale.
Managed by African Parks in partnership with the local Lozi people and their king (the Litunga), Liuwa is a conservation success story. The park's most famous resident was Lady Liuwa — a lone lioness who survived as the park's only lion for years before males were reintroduced. Today, a growing lion population patrols the plains alongside cheetah, hyena, and wild dogs.
Visiting Liuwa requires effort — access is by charter flight from Lusaka or Livingstone. But the reward is a wilderness experience of rare purity: vast skies, empty horizons, and wildlife encounters in complete solitude.
