Victoria Falls & Livingstone
Discover Victoria Falls & Livingstone
Victoria Falls — Mosi-oa-Tunya, 'The Smoke That Thunders' — is one of the natural wonders of the world. The Zambezi River, 1.7 kilometres wide, plunges over a basalt cliff into a chasm 108 metres deep, sending a column of spray skyward that is visible from 50 kilometres away and creating permanent rainbows that arc across the gorge.
From the Zambian side, the falls are experienced with particular intimacy. The Knife-Edge Bridge provides a perspective directly opposite the Eastern Cataract, where the spray is so intense you are drenched within seconds. The Boiling Pot — accessible via a steep path — brings you to the base of the gorge where the Zambezi churns and foams after its vertical descent.
The town of Livingstone — named after David Livingstone, the first European to see the falls in 1855 — has evolved into a sophisticated base for adventure and luxury. Sunset cruises on the upper Zambezi, helicopter 'Flight of Angels' over the falls, bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge, white-water rafting through the Batoka Gorge, and rhino tracking in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park complement the spectacle of the falls themselves.
