Niassa Special Reserve
Discover Niassa Special Reserve
Niassa is Mozambique's wild frontier — one of Africa's largest and most remote protected areas at 42,000 square kilometres, bigger than Switzerland and home to one of the continent's largest elephant populations. This is raw, unpolished wilderness that few travellers ever reach, and those who do are rewarded with a safari experience of extraordinary exclusivity.
The reserve's remoteness is its defining feature. Accessed only by charter flight, Niassa sees perhaps 200 visitors per year. The landscapes — miombo woodland, inselbergs, river systems, and granite kopjes — are vast and wild. Wildlife includes large elephant herds, lion, leopard, sable antelope, and wild dog. The Rovuma River along the northern border with Tanzania adds a riverine dimension to the safari.
Niassa is a destination for the experienced safari traveller who has seen the Serengeti and the Okavango and wants something genuinely frontier. The accommodations are comfortable but simple, the activities are authentic, and the sense of adventure is unmatched.
