Discover Akagera National Park

Akagera's story is one of Africa's most inspiring conservation narratives. Two decades ago, this 1,122-square-kilometre park in eastern Rwanda had lost its lions, rhinos, and much of its wildlife to poaching and encroachment. Today, thanks to a transformative partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks, Akagera has been comprehensively rewilded—lions reintroduced in 2015, black rhinos in 2017 and 2019, and the full complement of Big Five species now roams freely across a landscape of savannah, swamp, and lakes.

Akagera occupies a different ecological niche from Rwanda's misty highlands. This is classic East African savannah: rolling grasslands dotted with acacia trees, papyrus-fringed lakes teeming with hippos and crocodiles, and a surprising diversity of antelope species including topi, roan, and eland. Over 500 bird species have been recorded—making Akagera one of the best birding destinations in Central Africa.

The park's renaissance makes it an emotionally compelling addition to a Rwanda itinerary. Seeing a lion pride in Akagera is not merely a wildlife sighting—it is witnessing the tangible result of conservation investment, community engagement, and national will.
