Discover Great Zimbabwe & Masvingo

Great Zimbabwe is the most significant archaeological site in sub-Saharan Africa south of the Sahara—a medieval stone city that was once the capital of a civilisation controlling trade routes from the Indian Ocean to the African interior. The name Zimbabwe itself derives from the Shona phrase 'Dzimba-dza-mabwe'—Houses of Stone—and the nation took its name from these ruins upon independence in 1980.

The site covers over seven square kilometres and is divided into three distinct areas. The Hill Complex, perched atop a granite kopje, is believed to have served as the royal residence and spiritual centre—its narrow passages and defended approaches suggest both ceremony and security. The Great Enclosure below—the largest single ancient structure in sub-Saharan Africa—features walls eleven metres high and six metres thick, constructed without mortar from precisely cut granite blocks fitted with a craftsmanship that continues to astonish archaeologists. The famous Conical Tower within the enclosure remains an enigma—its purpose debated but its visual impact undiminished. The Valley Ruins, spread across the lowland between the hill and the enclosure, housed artisans, traders, and the general population.

Built between the 11th and 15th centuries, Great Zimbabwe was home to an estimated 18,000 people at its peak—a sophisticated society that traded gold, ivory, and cattle with Arab merchants on the Mozambican coast. The site's famous soapstone birds—eight carved figures recovered from the Hill Complex—have become the national emblem of Zimbabwe and appear on the country's flag and currency.

A guided tour of Great Zimbabwe takes approximately two to three hours and provides essential historical context that self-guided visits often miss. The nearby town of Masvingo offers comfortable accommodation and serves as a base for exploring the surrounding Mutirikwi Recreational Park, which protects white rhino populations and offers game drives.
