Discover Mana Pools National Park

Mana Pools is the connoisseur's safari destination—a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers what many professional guides consider the finest walking safari experience on the African continent. Located on the southern bank of the Zambezi River in northern Zimbabwe, Mana Pools derives its name from the four large inland pools (mana means 'four' in Shona) that remain after the Zambezi's annual flood recedes, creating permanent water sources that sustain extraordinary wildlife concentrations during the dry season.

What distinguishes Mana Pools from every other African park is the freedom to walk. This is one of the very few national parks in Africa where visitors may explore on foot without a guide—though for safety and quality of experience, guided walking safaris are strongly recommended. The terrain is uniquely suited to walking: open cathedral-like groves of albida (apple-ring acacia) trees create a parkland landscape with visibility that allows safe, extended encounters with elephant, buffalo, and wild dog at remarkably close range.

The Mana Pools elephant are famous for a behaviour found almost nowhere else—standing on their hind legs to reach the seed pods of albida trees, balancing like circus performers with their front legs braced against the trunk. Photographing this spectacle against the backdrop of the Zambezi escarpment, with the river glinting through the trees, is one of the defining images of African wildlife photography.

The Zambezi itself adds a riverine dimension to the safari. Canoe safaris downstream provide water-level perspectives of hippo, crocodile, and the rich birdlife that inhabits the river's islands and sandbanks. Fishing for tigerfish—the striped, aerial-leaping predator of the Zambezi—is a legendary experience for anglers. Mana Pools is remote, accessed by charter flight from Harare or Victoria Falls, and its camps are small, intimate, and designed for serious safari travellers who prioritise depth of experience over comfort.
