Plan your perfect Kruger safari — best camps, game drive routes, Big 5 sighting tips, and the ideal time to visit Africa's most iconic wildlife reserve.

Kruger National Park is South Africa's crown jewel — a wilderness the size of Wales, teeming with the Big 5 and over 500 bird species. Whether it's your first safari or your fiftieth, Kruger delivers unforgettable encounters with Africa's most iconic wildlife. Here's everything you need to plan the perfect Kruger safari.

Why Kruger National Park?

Established in 1898, Kruger is one of Africa's oldest and largest game reserves, covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres. Its incredible biodiversity includes 147 mammal species, 507 bird species, and 336 tree species.

What makes Kruger special is its accessibility and variety. From self-drive adventures along tar roads to luxury walking safaris in private concessions, the park caters to every style of traveller. Combined with the adjacent Sabi Sands and other private reserves, this is arguably the finest safari destination on Earth.

The Big 5 — Where to Find Them

  • Lion: The southern and central regions around Lower Sabie, Satara, and Skukuza offer the best lion sightings. Dawn and dusk game drives are most productive.
  • Leopard: Sabi Sands private reserve is world-famous for leopard sightings. In Kruger itself, the area between Berg-en-Dal and Lower Sabie is a hotspot.
  • Elephant: Found throughout the park. The Olifants River area and the roads around Letaba Camp are particularly rewarding for large herds.
  • Buffalo: Common in the southern and central regions. Massive herds are often seen near Lower Sabie and along the Crocodile River.
  • Rhino: Both black and white rhino inhabit the park. Best sighted in the southern section, particularly around Pretoriuskop and the H4-1 road.

Best Time for a Kruger Safari

Dry season (May–October) is peak safari season. Sparse vegetation and animals congregating around water sources make sightings easier. June–August mornings can be cold, so pack warm layers.

Green season (November–April) brings lush landscapes, baby animals, and spectacular birding. Rates are lower and the park is less crowded. The dramatic thunderstorm skies make for incredible photography.

Our recommendation: September and October offer the best of both worlds — dry conditions for excellent game viewing, warming temperatures, and the first new-born impala lambs attracting predators.

Kruger vs Sabi Sands: Which to Choose?

Kruger National Park offers vast landscapes and the freedom of self-drive. It's ideal for adventurous travellers who enjoy independence.

Sabi Sands (and other private reserves) offer guided game drives with expert trackers, off-road driving for closer encounters, night drives, and walking safaris. Sightings are typically more intimate, and the luxury lodges are extraordinary.

Our advice? Combine both. Spend 2 nights in Sabi Sands for the premium experience, then 1–2 nights in southern Kruger for the vast wilderness feel.

How to Get There

Fly from Cape Town or Johannesburg to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) near Nelspruit, or to Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport for the central section. Both are well-served by daily flights.

We arrange all transfers as part of your private safari package, including scenic road transfers through the Panorama Route (Blyde River Canyon, God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes) — a spectacular addition to your journey.

Safari Tips from Our Experts

  • Be at the gate when it opens at sunrise — the first two hours are the golden hours for predator sightings.
  • Bring binoculars and a 200-400mm lens. Even experienced guides use optics constantly.
  • Stay patient at waterholes. Animals come and go in waves, and the best moments often happen when you wait.
  • Dress in neutral colours (khaki, olive, brown). Avoid bright whites and blues.
  • Malaria precautions are essential. Consult your doctor about prophylaxis before travel.
