Overview

This is the complete Burundi — five unhurried days that string together the little country's ten most rewarding sights with a private guide, a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle and time to actually breathe at each stop. You begin on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in Bujumbura, thread south through hippo-filled Rusizi wetlands and lakeside fishing villages, then climb into the green highlands to Gitega, where the sacred Gishora drummers still perform on the same hill their fathers did. Along the way you stand at the disputed 'Source of the Nile', watch the Karera waterfalls tumble through the hills and unwind at the Bugarama thermal springs.

Burundi is one of Africa's least-visited corners, and that is exactly its gift: no queues of minibuses, no rehearsed performances, just an honest, hospitable country that most travellers never reach. Your days are private and flexible — if the light is good at the lake we linger, if the drummers are rehearsing we stay to watch. Nights are spent in the best comfortable hotels the country offers, most of them right on the water.

Who It's For

Ideal for well-travelled, curious visitors who value culture, landscape and genuine local encounters over checklists of big game — and who like the idea of exploring a country few of their friends will ever have seen. Not a Big Five safari; this is a cultural and scenic discovery.

Best Time to Travel

The long dry season from June to September is the most comfortable time for road travel, lake activities and the Gishora performances, with warm days and easy driving. The short drier window in January–February is also pleasant, while the wettest months of March–April bring lush green hills but slippery highland roads.

Why Choose This Package

A Country Few Ever Reach

Burundi sits far off the standard East-Africa circuit. On this tour you experience genuine, uncrowded travel — sacred drummers, Rift-Valley shores and highland forests without a single tour bus in sight.

Ten Signature Sights, One Trip

From the Source of the Nile and Rusizi's hippos to Gishora's royal drums and the Karera falls, the itinerary gathers the country's very best in five well-paced days.

Private & Flexible

Your own guide, driver and vehicle throughout mean the pace is yours — linger at a sunset, stay for an extra drum sequence, or detour to a market stall.

Culture at Its Heart

This is a journey built around living Burundian culture, led by local guides who bring the history of the old kingdom and the meaning of the drums to life.
