Visit the old fort and the House of Wonders, explore the poignant former slave market, and time your afternoon to end on the waterfront as the call to prayer drifts over the rooftops and the dhows come home. It is one of the most atmospheric towns in Africa.
2. Take a Spice Tour
Discover why they call it the Spice Island. Zanzibar built its fortune on cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla, and a guided spice-farm tour is a feast for the senses — crushing leaves, tasting tropical fruit and learning how these spices shaped the island's history and cuisine. 3. Relax on Nungwi & Kendwa Beaches
The finest sand on the island. On the northern tip, Nungwi and neighbouring Kendwa offer the widest, whitest beaches in Zanzibar, and — crucially — beaches barely affected by the dramatic tides that empty other coasts at low water, so you can swim all day. This is the liveliest, most beach-focused corner of the island, with a string of superb resorts and glorious sunsets over the sea.
4. Snorkel or Dive Mnemba Atoll
The jewel of Zanzibar's marine world. Off the north-east coast, the coral ring of Mnemba Atoll shelters a kaleidoscope of reef fish, turtles and, often, dolphins — the finest snorkelling and diving on the island. A boat trip out to the atoll, drifting over the reef in bath-warm water, is a highlight of any Zanzibar stay and a favourite with families and couples alike.
5. Sail a Sunset Dhow
The most romantic hour on the island. As the sun sinks, step aboard a traditional wooden dhow and drift out over the lagoon, sails glowing amber, a drink in hand and the coast turning to silhouette. 6. Meet the Red Colobus in Jozani Forest
Zanzibar's own wildlife. The Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park protects the last stronghold of the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on earth. A guided walk through the forest and its mangrove boardwalk is a gentle, fascinating half-day — a reminder that the island has a wild heart as well as a beach.
7. Visit Prison Island & the Giant Tortoises
A short hop from Stone Town. A boat ride from the old town brings you to Changuu, or Prison Island, home to a colony of giant Aldabra tortoises — some over a century old — as well as a small beach and reef for snorkelling. It is an easy, characterful half-day, blending history, wildlife and a swim.
8. Feast on Swahili Food & the Night Market
Taste the crossroads of the Indian Ocean. Zanzibar's cuisine is a fragrant fusion of African, Arab and Indian flavours — coconut curries, grilled seafood, spiced pilau and the famous Zanzibar pizza. When to Visit Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a year-round island, but the best months are June to October — the cool, dry season — and December to February, warm and dry between the rains. Both windows deliver glorious beach weather and calm seas. The long rains fall roughly from late March into May.
