Shop a Cape Town tour online and you meet the same wall every time. The day is sold in glowing paragraphs — the cableway, the penguins, the wine — and then, where the price should be, there is a widget. Check availability. Select a date. The number only appears once you have picked a day and started handing over details. We run tours out of this city, and we do it the other way round: every one of the ten below carries a real, published price in US dollars, so you can see what your day costs before you speak to anyone.
These are the ten best Cape Town tours, packages and holidays for 2027 and 2028, ranked by fit rather than by price alone. They cover what people actually come to Cape Town for — Table Mountain, Cape Point and the Boulders penguins; the Winelands of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch; Robben Island and the harbour; a champagne sunset on the bay; the Aquila Big Five a couple of hours inland; and the 2- and 3-day Cape holidays for travellers who want more than a single day. Each is a real, bookable tour, private or small-group, and priced in full. For everything the city and its surrounds offer beyond this shortlist, our companion Cape Town tours and packages guide lays it all out.
How We Ranked These Cape Town Tours
Each tour was judged on five things: what you see (how many of the headline sights it covers and how well), how it is run (the guiding, the vehicle, the pace and whether it feels rushed), value (what you get for the price, private or small-group), who it suits (first-timers, couples, families, wine lovers, the time-pressed), and how it flows (the route, the timing around wind and light, and how easily it joins a longer trip). The ranking reflects the best overall fit, not the biggest price tag — which is why the list does not run in price order.
1. Table Mountain, Penguins & Cape Point Full-Day Tour — 8–10 Hours
Best for: The three icons in one well-paced day — the tour we would put a first-timer on.
If you have one day in Cape Town, this is the one. It strings together the three things everyone comes for — the Table Mountain cableway, the Cape Point headland at the tip of the peninsula, and the African penguins at Boulders Beach — into a single loop that also takes in Chapman's Peak Drive, the fishing harbour at Hout Bay and the naval town of Simon's Town along the way. For $49 per person it is the best-value day out of the city, and it leaves you with the whole sweep of the Cape in your camera by evening.
We go anticlockwise, up the mountain first thing before the cloud and the queues, then down the Atlantic seaboard and over Chapman's Peak to the Cape of Good Hope section of the national park, and back up the False Bay side to the penguins in the afternoon. The cableway ticket is the one variable — it closes in high wind — so we keep a wet-weather running order in reserve and swap the mountain to the end of the day if the morning blows.
Price from US$49 per person (8–10 hours, small-group, hotel pick-up and drop-off, guide and transport; cableway, Cape Point and penguin entry fees extra). Best season: Year-round; clearest and calmest in autumn and spring. Ideal for: First-time visitors, anyone short on time who wants the icons in one day.
2. All-Inclusive Private Cape Tour — 8–9 Hours
Best for: The same great route, but private, at your own pace, with the costs settled up front.
This is the full-day peninsula loop with two upgrades: it is private — your own guide and vehicle — and it is all-inclusive, with the cableway, Cape Point and penguin entry fees, plus lunch, folded into one price so there is nothing to pay on the day. At $85 per person it is remarkable value for a private tour, and it is the one we recommend to couples, families and anyone who would rather set their own rhythm than keep to a group's.
Because it is yours, the order bends to the weather and to you — longer at the penguins if the children are enchanted, a detour to Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden or the Constantia wine farms if you fancy, an earlier or later start to suit your flight or your morning. The guide is a local who knows which viewpoint catches the light and which bend on Chapman's Peak is worth stopping for.
Price from US$85 per person (8–9 hours, private guide and vehicle, hotel pick-up, all entry fees and lunch included). Best season: Year-round; calmest in autumn and spring. Ideal for: Couples and families, anyone who wants a private day without a private-tour price.
3. Cape of Good Hope & Cape Peninsula Private Tour — 8 Hours
Best for: The peninsula done slowly and privately, with time to walk and to stop.
Where the all-inclusive tour keeps things efficient, this private peninsula day is built for lingering. It follows the same grand loop — Hout Bay and Chapman's Peak, the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, Boulders and Simon's Town — but with the time to walk the trail out to the old lighthouse, take the Flying Dutchman funicular, stroll the Boulders boardwalk twice over, and sit down to a proper lunch at a harbour restaurant rather than a packed one. At $150 per person it is the considered choice for travellers who want the Cape at a walking, looking, photographing pace.
It is also the easiest day to shape to an interest — birders linger at the wetlands, photographers chase the light at the Cape of Good Hope sign, and we can add Kirstenbosch or a Constantia tasting on the way back into town. Table Mountain is left for a separate morning, which is the honest way to give both the mountain and the peninsula their due.
Price from US$150 per person (8 hours, private guide and vehicle, hotel pick-up and drop-off; entry fees and lunch extra). Best season: Year-round; spring brings the fynbos into flower across the reserve. Ideal for: Slower travellers, photographers, couples who want the peninsula to themselves.
4. Cape Winelands Luxury Wine Tour — 8 Hours
Best for: The best wine day out of Cape Town — three estates, lunch under the oaks, a guide who knows the cellars.
An hour from the city the Winelands open out, and a day among them is the gentlest, most-loved trip we run. This private tour takes in three estates across Stellenbosch and Franschhoek — a mix of a grand historic farm, a boutique family cellar and one chosen for its view — with tastings at each and a long lunch paired with wine under the oaks. At $105 per person it is a full day of the Cape's finest valleys, with a guide who books the cellar tables and drives so no one has to.
We tailor the estates to your taste — the Cap Classique sparkling houses, the old Cape Dutch names, or the new-wave Swartland style — and build in a stop in the oak-lined streets of Franschhoek, the country's food capital. It pairs naturally with a peninsula day: one for the sea, one for the vines.
Price from US$105 per person (8 hours, private guide and vehicle, hotel pick-up, three estate tastings and lunch; some premium tastings extra). Best season: Year-round; February to April is harvest, and the vines turn gold in May. Ideal for: Wine lovers, couples, a relaxed day away from the sightseeing.
5. Aquila Big 5 Safari Day Trip from Cape Town — 10–12 Hours
Best for: The only way to see the Big Five from Cape Town without an overnight.
Cape Town is not Big Five country — for that you cross the mountains into the Karoo, about two hours inland, to the Aquila Private Game Reserve. This long day takes you there and back with game drives in open vehicles after lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard, plus a sit-down lunch at the lodge, all for $270 per person. It is the single most popular way to fold a taste of safari into a Cape Town holiday when you do not have days to spare for the bush proper.
It is a full day — an early start, the drive out over the Hex River mountains, the morning or afternoon drive, lunch, and the road home — so it suits travellers who want the experience ticked off rather than a slow bush immersion. For a genuine multi-day safari we would steer you to a reserve stay instead; but as a day trip, Aquila delivers the animals and the open-vehicle thrill within reach of the city.
Price from US$270 per person (10–12 hours, hotel pick-up and drop-off, game drives and lunch included). Best season: Year-round; the Karoo is hot in summer and crisp in winter, with good sightings throughout. Ideal for: Families and first-timers who want the Big Five without an overnight.
6. Half-Day Robben Island Ferry & Guided Prison Tour — 4 Hours
Best for: The most important half-day in Cape Town — the island where Nelson Mandela was held.
No trip to Cape Town is complete without the ferry out to Robben Island, the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Table Bay where Nelson Mandela spent eighteen of his twenty-seven years in prison. The tour is run by the official island museum: a catamaran across the bay from the V&A Waterfront, a bus tour of the island, and a walk through the prison itself led by a former political prisoner — which is what stays with you, a first-hand account rather than a plaque. At $75 per person it is the one piece of history we tell every visitor not to skip.
The crossing is weather-dependent and the sailings sell out, so we book ahead and keep an eye on the forecast — a strong southeaster can cancel the ferry. Back on the mainland, the Waterfront is right there for lunch, which is why this slots neatly into a half-day with the harbour or a sunset cruise to follow.
Price from US$75 per person (about 4 hours, return ferry from the V&A Waterfront, island bus tour and guided prison walk included). Best season: Year-round; calmest crossings in autumn. Ideal for: Everyone — history, context and the single most moving few hours in the city.
7. Sunset Cruise & Champagne from the V&A Waterfront — 2 Hours
Best for: The most romantic two hours in the city — Table Mountain gold from the water, a glass in hand.
As the light goes, there is no better place to be than out on Table Bay looking back at it. This sunset cruise sails from the V&A Waterfront into the bay for the hour around sundown, with sparkling wine poured on deck as Table Mountain, Lion's Head and the seaboard turn gold and then pink behind you. At $100 per person it is the easy, lovely close to a day — and the thing couples most often thank us for adding.
It runs on a catamaran or a classic sailing yacht depending on the evening, and the whole thing lasts about two hours, back on the quay in time for dinner at a Waterfront table. In season you may pass seals and, with luck, dolphins; year-round you get the city's best-known view from the one angle most visitors never see it.
Price from US$100 per person (about 2 hours, sunset sailing from the V&A Waterfront, sparkling wine on board). Best season: Best in the long, dry evenings of November to April; runs year-round, weather permitting. Ideal for: Couples, anyone wanting a gentle, memorable end to a Cape day.
8. Franschhoek Wine Tram Experience — 7 Hours
Best for: The most relaxed wine day of all — hop on, hop off the open-sided tram between estates.
For a wine day with a little theatre to it, the Franschhoek Wine Tram is hard to beat. An open-sided tram and tram-bus loop runs between the estates of the Franschhoek valley, and you hop on and off as you please — taste at one farm, rejoin for the next, lunch at a third, all at your own speed, with the vines and mountains sliding past between stops. At $95 per person it is the gentlest, most sociable way to taste the valley, with no one worrying about driving.
We handle the transfer from Cape Town and back and set you up on the line that suits your taste, so the day itself is entirely yours to drift through. It is a lovely alternative to a guided wine tour for travellers who like to set their own pace, and it goes down especially well with groups and celebrations.
Price from US$95 per person (about 7 hours, return transfer from Cape Town, hop-on hop-off tram ticket; tastings and lunch extra). Best season: Year-round; glorious in the gold of autumn. Ideal for: Relaxed wine lovers, groups, anyone who likes to wander at their own pace.
9. 2-Day Cape Town Big 6 Tour — 2 Days
Best for: The short package — the city's ‘Big 6’ sights done properly over two days.
Cape Town has its own ‘Big 6’ — Table Mountain, Cape Point, Boulders penguins, Robben Island, the Cape Winelands and the city's Kirstenbosch-and-harbour heart — and a single day cannot do them justice. This two-day package gives each its proper share: the mountain and the peninsula on one day, the island, the Winelands and the city on the other, with an overnight in between so nothing is rushed. At $120 per person it is the best-value way to see the headline Cape in a weekend.
It works beautifully as the spine of a short Cape break, and we can tilt it toward wine, history or the coast depending on what you most want. For travellers arriving on a cruise or a tight schedule, it is the package that guarantees you leave having seen the real Cape Town rather than a rushed slice of it.
Price from US$120 per person (2 days, guide and transport, the Big 6 sights; accommodation, entry fees and meals quoted to your choice). Best season: Year-round; calmest and clearest in autumn and spring. Ideal for: Weekend visitors, cruise passengers, anyone wanting the headlines without the rush.
10. 3-Day Cape Town Highlights Luxury Tour — 3 Days
Best for: The full Cape holiday — three unhurried days, privately guided, at the top end.
When you want Cape Town done properly rather than squeezed, this is the one. Three private, unhurried days cover the mountain and the city, the full peninsula and the penguins, and a day in the Winelands — with the time to add a sunset cruise, Kirstenbosch or a beach afternoon, and with the pick of the city's best hotels and restaurants worked in. At $1,400 per person it is the luxury end of the list: a private guide throughout, flagship stays, and every detail handled.
It is the shape we build most often for travellers who have flown a long way and want the Cape to be the memorable start of a bigger trip — the Winelands, a safari, or the road east along the coast. Everything is tailored: the pace, the lodges, the tables, the balance of city, sea and vine. You arrive; we have already thought of the rest.
Price from US$1,400 per person (3 days, private guide and vehicle throughout, luxury accommodation and listed meals; some entry fees and premium extras additional). Best season: Year-round; the long summer evenings of November to April suit it best. Ideal for: Travellers who want the complete, unhurried, top-end Cape Town holiday.
Which Cape Town Tour Is Right for You?
The ten rank by fit, so start with what you most want from the day, then let the price and the time you have settle the shortlist:
- One day, want the icons — the Table Mountain, Penguins & Cape Point Full-Day Tour (from $49pp), or its private all-inclusive version (from $85pp).
- The peninsula, slowly and privately — the Cape of Good Hope & Cape Peninsula Private Tour (from $150pp).
- A wine day — the Cape Winelands Luxury Wine Tour (from $105pp), or the hop-on Franschhoek Wine Tram (from $95pp).
- The Big Five without an overnight — the Aquila Big 5 Safari Day Trip (from $270pp).
- History you should not miss — the Robben Island ferry and prison tour (from $75pp).

- More than a day — the 2-Day Big 6 (from $120pp) or the 3-Day Highlights Luxury Tour (from $1,400pp).
Most visitors end up stitching two or three of these together — a peninsula day, a wine day and a sunset cruise, say — and the multi-day packages simply do that stitching for you. When to Travel — and When to Book
Cape Town's weather shapes which tours run as much as which you enjoy. The summer of November to April is warm, dry and long in the evenings — best for the beaches, the Winelands and the sunset cruises — but it is peak season, with the highest rates, the busiest sights and a southeaster wind that can blow for days and close the cableway or cancel a crossing. Autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) are the sweet spots: settled, warm and quieter, with spring adding the fynbos flowers and the last of the Hermanus whales. Winter (June to August) is green, cool and cheaper, and the clear days between the fronts are among the loveliest of the year.
On booking: the day tours can usually be arranged at a few days' notice, but Robben Island, the cableway and the sunset cruises sell out in peak season and are weather-dependent, so we book those first and keep a flexible running order. The multi-day packages and the best Winelands tables want a few weeks' lead time in summer. Booking ahead locks in the rate and the dates, and lets us plan the days around the wind and the light rather than around what is left.
