Grippy closed shoes

The limestone is sharp and the trails uneven. Sturdy closed walking shoes or light boots with good grip are essential for the via-ferrata and the gorges.

Bring gloves

The rock is razor-sharp and the cables can be rough on the hands. Light gloves make the via-ferrata crossing far more comfortable.

Embrace the journey

Reaching the Tsingy is a two-day 4x4 expedition with river ferries. Long days on rough roads are part of the adventure — relax into it and enjoy the wild west.

Dry season only

The park is only reliably open May to November. Plan your expedition for the dry months, when the roads and the via-ferrata are safe and the light is superb.

Is the via-ferrata crossing safe and difficult?

It is thrilling but safe with expert guides. You wear a harness clipped to fixed cables throughout, and the route uses iron rungs, ladders and suspension bridges. A reasonable level of fitness and a head for heights help, but the guides adjust the pace to your group. For those who prefer less exposure, the gentler Petit Tsingy offers the same wonder without the vertiginous sections.

How do I get to the Tsingy?

The classic route is an overland 4x4 expedition of about two days each way from Morondava, including river-ferry crossings on the Tsiribihina and Manambolo. It is part of the adventure — remote, wild and beautiful. The journey is only possible in the dry season, and we arrange every vehicle, ferry, permit and guide from start to finish.

When is the Tsingy open?

The park is reliably accessible only in the dry season, from around May to November. Heavy rains from December to March flood the rivers and roads and the park effectively closes.
