Why Sabi Sands delivers the best leopard sightings in Africa, plus insider tips on choosing the right luxury lodge and what to expect on game drives.

10 min read 20 March 2026 Sabi Sands

If there is a single place on Earth where the safari experience reaches its absolute peak, it is the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. Sharing an unfenced border with Kruger National Park, this private reserve is home to the most exclusive lodges in Africa and offers unparalleled leopard sightings. This is the safari that dreams are made of.

What Makes Sabi Sands Special

Sabi Sands is a 65,000-hectare private game reserve adjacent to the Kruger National Park's southwestern boundary. Unlike Kruger, vehicles in Sabi Sands are permitted to drive off-road, which means your guide can follow animal tracks deep into the bush for extraordinary close encounters.

The reserve is home to an exceptionally high density of leopards — many habituated to vehicles over generations — making it the best place in Africa for leopard sightings. Add the rest of the Big 5, wild dogs, cheetah, and over 350 bird species, and you have a wildlife paradise.

The Leopard Capital of Africa

Sabi Sands is renowned worldwide for its leopard sightings. Several famous leopards — tracked and known by name by the guides — have become legends of the South African bush.

On a typical 3-night stay, guests see leopard on at least 2–3 occasions, often at remarkably close range. The combination of off-road driving, expert trackers, and habituated animals creates photographic opportunities found nowhere else.

Choosing the Right Lodge

Sabi Sands hosts some of the world's most acclaimed safari lodges, from the understated elegance of Londolozi to the contemporary luxury of Singita and the legendary hospitality of Lion Sands.

Each lodge has its own traverse area within the reserve, and the style varies from rustic-chic to ultra-modern glass-walled suites. We'll match you with the perfect property based on your style, budget, and what matters most to you.

  • Londolozi: Pioneering conservation and luxury since 1926. Intimate, family-owned, and known for its leopard photography.
  • Singita: Contemporary design meets raw wilderness. Consistently ranked among the world's best hotels.
  • Lion Sands: Treehouse sleep-outs under the stars. A signature Sabi Sands experience you'll never forget.
  • MalaMala: The largest privately owned Big 5 game reserve in South Africa. Unmatched Big 5 sighting frequency.

A Typical Day on Safari

Your day begins before dawn with coffee and rusks, then a 3–4 hour morning game drive as the bush awakens. Return for a sumptuous brunch, a swim, or a spa treatment.

Afternoon tea at 3pm precedes the evening game drive, which stretches through golden hour and into the night — spotlight-lit for nocturnal species like leopard, hyena, and aardvark. End with a bush dinner under a canopy of stars.

How to Get There

Fly from Cape Town or Johannesburg to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) or Hoedspruit. Charter flights directly to the lodge airstrip are also available.

We arrange seamless transfers and often combine Sabi Sands with the Panorama Route, Cape Town, or Victoria Falls for the ultimate Southern Africa itinerary.

Expert Safari Tips

  • Three nights is the sweet spot — six game drives give you excellent Big 5 chances.
  • Bring warm layers for early morning drives, even in summer. Open vehicles get cold.
  • A 100-400mm lens is ideal for Sabi Sands. The animals are close, so you rarely need extreme telephoto.
  • Ask your guide about tracking on foot — guided bush walks add an extraordinary dimension.
  • Sabi Sands is malaria-area. Consult your doctor about prophylaxis.
