Kissama is one of conservation's great comeback stories. Emptied by decades of civil war, it was restocked from 2001 in the celebrated 'Operation Noah's Ark' airlift of elephants and other game from Botswana and South Africa, and in 2025 the wider Quiçama landscape was inscribed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Today, elephants, giraffe, roan and eland move again through a vast palm-and-baobab savanna that rolls to the Kwanza River and the Atlantic — just 70km from the capital. From Kissama you fly south to Iona, Angola's largest national park: 15,150 km² where towering orange dunes, gravel plains studded with ancient welwitschia plants, and the fog-cooled Skeleton-Coast shoreline meet in a landscape that feels like the edge of the earth.
