Essential guidance for your journey
Bwindi has more habituated groups and higher success rates. Mgahinga is more dramatic (Virunga volcanoes) but fewer gorilla families.
Bwindi's trails are steep, humid and muddy. 'Impenetrable' is no exaggeration. Bring waterproof boots, gaiters and poles.
Not every drive finds them, but Ishasha rangers know which fig trees the prides favour. Morning drives are best.
The channel boat cruise is a highlight — hippos by the hundred, basking crocodiles, and elephants drinking at the shore.
Uganda logs over 1,000 bird species. Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth are both birding hotspots — bring binoculars.
Bwindi is cold and misty at altitude. Queen Elizabeth is hot and dry. Pack for both extremes.
Uganda's two signature experiences in one balanced week.
See the rare lions of the Ishasha plains.
