Nairobi, Amboseli and a Masai Mara conservancy, paced and priced for families with children
This is the trip we build when a family wants to take the children on their first safari and wants it done properly. It starts gently in Nairobi with the giraffe centre and the elephant orphanage — close, slow, hands-on wildlife that works for younger children — then moves to Amboseli, where the elephants come right up to the vehicle against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro and the terrain is flat and easy. The last three nights are in a private Masai Mara conservancy, where the camp takes families, the drives flex around short attention spans and a junior ranger programme keeps children busy between game drives.
We are straight with parents about ages. Most Mara conservancy camps take children from about six, and a few family units welcome younger ones when you book a private vehicle so the whole family drives together on its own schedule. Younger than six, we will tell you honestly whether it is the right year or whether to wait — and we would rather say so now than have a long drive go wrong with a bored four-year-old.
Families introducing children to safari, grandparents travelling with grandchildren, and first-time visitors who want short, flexible game drives, easy terrain and camps that are genuinely set up for children rather than merely tolerating them.
The giraffe centre and the elephant orphanage — close, gentle wildlife that works for younger children
Big, relaxed elephant herds at close range with Kilimanjaro behind, on flat, easy terrain
Three nights in a Mara conservancy camp that takes families, with family tents and space to run
Tracking, bush skills and a certificate to keep children busy and learning between drives
Your own vehicle and guide so drives can be short, stop for snacks and turn back when needed
Short scenic flights instead of long road days, so nobody spends the holiday in a car
Arrive at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta airport and transfer to a family-friendly hotel with a pool and a garden — useful after a long flight. The day is kept deliberately empty so children can sleep off the journey. Your guide meets the family in the evening to talk through the week.

June to October is the classic dry season with the best game viewing and the migration in the Mara, though it is the busiest and priciest. The short dry window from late December to February is warm, green and quieter — often the better choice for families balancing wildlife with cost and crowds. Avoid the long rains of April and May for a first safari with children.
Flat, easy Amboseli, a conservancy camp that takes families, short flexible drives and a junior ranger programme — chosen because they suit children, not squeezed into an adult itinerary.
We tell you plainly what works at what age and whether a younger child is ready this year or better in a couple of years. A bored toddler on a long drive helps nobody.
Light-aircraft hops between Nairobi, Amboseli and the Mara keep the days about wildlife rather than hours in a vehicle.
On the luxury tiers you have your own guide and vehicle, so the family sets its own pace — stop for a snack, turn back early, or stay out when the children are loving it.
