You drive yourself through the Kruger National Park in a comfortable hire car, on a tarred and graded-gravel road network that reaches the great majority of sightings, staying in SANParks rest camps on the rivers and setting your own pace from the moment the gates open. Over six nights you work south to central Kruger — the H4-1 along the Sabie River for leopard, the H1 roads north of Skukuza for lion, and the Tshokwane plains for cheetah — with the whole itinerary, every camp and the vehicle arranged and supported by us.
You base at three of the finest rest camps: Skukuza, the park's largest camp on the Sabie River; Lower Sabie, many self-drivers' favourite for its game-rich river outlook; and Satara, the 'cat camp' in the central grasslands. Each has fuel, a shop and a restaurant, so you carry almost nothing. Best Time to Travel
The dry winter, May to September, is the easiest season to self-drive the Kruger — thin bush and game concentrated along the rivers. The green summer is lush and superb for birding and newborn game, but tall grass hides wildlife and afternoon storms are common.
