Eight Days Riding the Empty Beaches and Tidal Rivers of the Transkei Coast
For a completely different kind of riding safari, head to the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape — the old Transkei, a malaria-free coastline of empty beaches, dramatic cliffs, estuaries and rolling green hills dotted with Xhosa homesteads. Over seven nights the multi-day Wild Coast Trail follows the shore between river mouths, cantering long stretches of firm sand at low tide, crossing tidal rivers, and passing villages that see almost no visitors. This is a point-to-point coastal expedition — a week of long beach canters and true remoteness, scheduled around the tides rather than the diary.
The trail demands a strong, fit, independent seat — you will ride long canters on the beach, negotiate river crossings timed to the tides, and cover real distance day after day. Accommodation is in characterful coastal hotels and lodges along the route, with hearty meals and the camaraderie of a small group of riders. Whale-watching season (roughly July to November) adds southern right and humpback whales to the seascape. Weight limits sit around 95 kg and, because the trails are tide-scheduled, exact dates and daily timings are set by the ocean.
Strong, fit, independent riders confident and balanced at walk, trot and canter on unfamiliar horses over varied ground for sustained periods. You should be comfortable with long beach canters and tidal river crossings. Gentler Meander, Mini Beach and river options exist for less experienced riders. Weight limit around 95 kg.

Fly to East London and transfer roughly an hour to the coast, where the trail begins. Meet the horses and the trail team, settle into your first coastal base, and take a short orientation ride along the beach so guides can match you to the right horse for the days ahead.
