Why Ten Days Is the Perfect Length

Botswana rewards the traveller who slows down. Its camps are small, its concessions vast and its wildlife best appreciated at an unhurried pace — and ten days is the length that lets you do that properly. It is long enough to combine three genuinely different regions, to settle into the rhythm of each camp, and to absorb the twin flight days without ever feeling rushed. Shorter trips force you to choose between the water of the delta and the big game of the north; ten days lets you have both.

The itinerary that follows is our most-requested Botswana journey — a fly-in circuit that begins in the water-rich Okavango, moves to the predator-dense Linyanti, and finishes on the elephant-thronged Chobe riverfront before an easy exit to Victoria Falls or home. Every transfer is by light aircraft, every camp is small and luxurious, and every region adds something the others cannot. Days 1–3: The Okavango Delta

Your journey begins with a light-aircraft flight from Maun into the heart of the Okavango Delta — a spectacular introduction as the channels, lagoons and palm islands unfold beneath the wings. For the first three nights you settle into a water-rich delta camp, where safari means something quite different from the dusty drives most people picture. Here you glide by mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe) through papyrus-lined channels, drift past drinking elephants in a low aluminium boat, and step onto game-rich islands for walks and drives.

The delta's islands hold superb leopard, and its floodplains are alive with red lechwe, elephant, hippo and an extraordinary cast of birds. Days here follow the light — early activities, a leisurely brunch back in camp, siesta through the heat, and an afternoon on the water that melts into a sundowner as the sky turns molten. It is the gentlest, most romantic opening imaginable, and it sets the tone for everything that follows.

Days 4–6: The Linyanti and Selinda

A short flight north-east lifts you from the water to the wild, game-rich concessions of the Linyanti and Selinda. This is big-cat and wild-dog country — vast private wildernesses where off-road driving and night drives are permitted, and where you are likely to be the only vehicle at a sighting. The Linyanti's riverine woodland and floodplains draw large elephant herds in the dry season, big lion prides patrol the marsh edges, and the region is one of Africa's last strongholds for the endangered African wild dog.

The pace here is more classic-safari — early morning drives in the cool, tracking a leopard or following a hunting pack of dogs; unhurried afternoons; and thrilling night drives that reveal the aardwolf, civet, genet and honey badger the daylight hides. Days 7–9: The Chobe Riverfront

The final leg brings you to the Chobe — home to the largest elephant population on earth. A flight to Kasane and a transfer to a riverfront lodge (or the wonderful option of a luxury houseboat) place you on the banks of a river that, in the dry season, draws elephants in their thousands. Here the star activity is the water: a leisurely afternoon boat cruise brings you level with drinking elephants, yawning hippos, basking crocodiles and skimming carmine bee-eaters, all in the golden light of the late day.

Morning game drives in Chobe National Park add lion, giraffe, sable and vast buffalo herds, while the river itself offers some of the finest and most relaxed wildlife photography in Africa. After the intensity of the Linyanti, the Chobe's easy, water-borne rhythm is a perfect finale — spectacular sightings enjoyed with a cold drink in hand as the sun sinks over the floodplain.

Day 10: Departure or Extend to Victoria Falls

On your final morning a short flight carries you out — either directly home via Maun or Kasane, or on to Victoria Falls for a spectacular two- or three-night extension.
