Cape Town Safari Tours: Big Five Near Cape Town (2026 Guide)

Quick answer: You can go on a real Big Five safari from Cape Town — the malaria-free reserves of the Karoo are just 2–3 hours from the city. Aquila is the closest and best for day trips; Inverdoorn and Sanbona are larger and more exclusive for overnight stays. Day trips run about $130–$250 pp; overnight safaris from around $350–$900 pp per night. All are malaria-free and family-friendly. For the best sightings, stay the night and drive at dawn and dusk.

Stand on top of Table Mountain and it is hard to imagine lions anywhere near. Cape Town is a city of beaches, vineyards and ocean — not the bushveld of safari postcards. And yet, two hours inland, the mountains give way to the Karoo, a vast semi-desert of red earth and silver scrub where the Big Five roam free. You can leave your Cape Town hotel after breakfast and be watching elephants by mid-morning.

This is one of the happy surprises of a Cape holiday: a genuine, malaria-free Big Five safari is within easy reach, no long flight required. After two decades arranging these trips, this is our honest guide to safari from Cape Town — which reserve to choose, whether to go for the day or stay the night, and how to fit real wildlife into a city break.

The Big Five of the Karoo — a genuine safari within reach of the city.

Where Are the Big Five Near Cape Town?

There are no wild Big Five inside the city itself — but a cluster of first-class malaria-free reserves lies within a comfortable drive. Each has its own character.

Aquila — The Closest & Easiest

About two hours from Cape Town, Aquila Private Game Reserve is the closest Big Five reserve to the city and the most popular for day trips. It offers structured morning, afternoon and sunset game drives, an animal rescue and rehabilitation centre, and a range of accommodation from lodge rooms to luxury cottages. Its accessibility makes it ideal for visitors who want a genuine safari without giving up too much of their Cape Town time.

Inverdoorn — Larger & More Exclusive

Around two and a half to three hours from the city, Inverdoorn is bigger than Aquila and offers a more intimate, boutique experience. It is home to a celebrated cheetah rescue and rehabilitation programme, has excellent stargazing thanks to its remote Karoo setting, and suits guests who want their safari a little quieter and more upmarket.

Sanbona — The Big Wilderness

Roughly three to four hours away in the Little Karoo, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is the largest and most remote of the three, covering some 580 square kilometres. It offers a genuine sense of wilderness, prehistoric rock art and rare species alongside the Big Five, and is best enjoyed as an overnight or two-night stay rather than a day trip.

Day Trip or Overnight?

This is the single most important decision, and our advice is honest: if you can spare the night, do. Here is how the two compare.

  Day Trip Overnight
Time needed One full day from the city One or two nights away
Game drives Usually one, midday Two — dawn and dusk (best light)
Sighting odds Good Excellent
Best for Short stays, a taster safari A proper safari experience

Fitting Safari Into a Cape Town Holiday

A Cape Town safari slots neatly around the city's other highlights. A common and lovely rhythm is two or three days of Cape Town — the Peninsula, the Winelands, the city — followed by an overnight Karoo safari, then back for the beaches and restaurants. For those with more time, the Cape safari makes a perfect appetiser before a longer bush safari in the Kruger or a Garden Route journey east to the Eastern Cape reserves. We build it in wherever it fits best.

This is our honest guide to safari from Cape Town: which reserve to choose, whether to go for the day or stay the night, and how to fit real wildlife into a city holiday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. While there are no wild Big Five inside the city, several excellent malaria-free game reserves lie within a two- to three-hour drive in the Karoo. Aquila is the closest and most popular for day trips; Inverdoorn and Sanbona offer larger, more exclusive experiences. You can visit for the day or stay overnight for dawn and dusk game drives. A Cape Town safari is one of the easiest ways to add the Big Five to a city holiday.

Aquila Private Game Reserve is the closest, about two hours from the city in the Karoo, and the most popular choice for day trips because it is so accessible. Inverdoorn is roughly two and a half to three hours away and larger, with a renowned cheetah rehabilitation centre. Sanbona, three to four hours away, is the largest and most remote of the three. All are malaria-free and home to the Big Five.

For visitors short on time, absolutely — a day trip to Aquila lets you experience a real Big Five game drive and be back in Cape Town by evening. That said, wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk, so if your schedule allows, an overnight stay gives you two game drives in the best light and a far greater chance of memorable sightings. We offer both and advise honestly based on how much time you have.

Yes, entirely. Every game reserve within reach of Cape Town — Aquila, Inverdoorn, Sanbona and the wider Karoo and Western Cape reserves — is malaria-free, with no medication required. This makes a Cape Town safari especially suitable for families with young children, older travellers and anyone who prefers to avoid anti-malarial tablets.

A guided Big Five day trip from Cape Town, including transfers, a game drive and usually lunch, typically ranges from about $130 to $250 per person. An overnight safari with luxury lodging, meals and two game drives usually runs from about $350 to $900 per person per night, depending on the reserve and lodge. We arrange private transfers and tailor the reserve and comfort level to your budget.

The reserves are home to the Big Five — lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and the more elusive leopard — along with plains game such as zebra, giraffe, springbok and hippo, and predators including cheetah at reserves with rehabilitation programmes. Leopard sightings are rare, as they are everywhere, but lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo are seen regularly. Birdlife across the Karoo is excellent too.

The reserves are open and rewarding all year. The cooler, drier months from April to September often bring animals to waterholes and are very comfortable for game drives. Summer (November to March) is warmer and pairs well with a beach-and-safari city holiday. Early morning and late afternoon drives are always best for activity, whatever the season, which is another reason an overnight stay pays off.

It depends on your time. If you have a day or two around a Cape Town stay, the Karoo reserves give you a genuine, convenient, malaria-free Big Five experience without long flights. If you have several days and want the classic African bush at its most iconic, a Kruger or Sabi Sand safari is worth the trip north. Many of our guests do both — a Cape Town safari as a taster, then a longer bush safari elsewhere. We help you decide.

We match you to the right reserve for your time and taste, arrange private transfers from your hotel, book the game drives or overnight lodge, and build the safari neatly into your Cape Town itinerary. Prefer a private vehicle and guide? We arrange that too. With a 4.9 out of 5 rating from more than 5,700 travellers since 2008, we know these reserves and the roads to them, and we make the whole day effortless.
