Mozambique Beach & Safari Combo: Bush to Bazaruto (2026 Guide)

The perfect African holiday has two halves: the raw thrill of a Big Five safari, then the soft crash of Indian Ocean waves on a deserted white beach. A Mozambique beach and safari combo delivers both — a guided game drive at dawn in the Greater Kruger followed, three days later, by barefoot sundowners on Benguerra Island. This is the classic 'bush and beach,' and nowhere does it better than the pairing of South Africa's world-class safari reserves with Mozambique's pristine Bazaruto Archipelago.

This guide lays it all out: the best safari-and-beach combinations, honest 2026 costs, when to travel, how the logistics work and the exact itineraries we design. If you have been dreaming of lions at sunrise and snorkelling over coral reefs by lunchtime a few days later, read on.

Why Mozambique for a Beach & Safari Combo

Mozambique sits just across South Africa's eastern border, making it one of the easiest Indian Ocean beach add-ons to a safari. But it is the quality of the coast — not just the convenience — that makes it special.

The Bazaruto Archipelago — Africa's hidden gem

Five islands protected as a national park, fringed by coral reefs and reached only by helicopter or boat. The two main islands, Benguerra and Bazaruto Island, are home to a handful of intimate lodges, dive centres and nothing else. The water is warm and clear, the beaches are empty, and the marine life — manta rays, whale sharks, dolphins, turtles — is extraordinary. This is not the crowded Maldives; this is Africa's last untouched tropical coast.

Easy pairing with the Greater Kruger

A short regional flight from Nelspruit or Skukuza (Kruger's main airports) to Vilanculos takes about 90 minutes. From Vilanculos, a helicopter or dhow boat transfer whisks you to your island lodge in under 30 minutes. The entire journey from your final game drive to your beach villa can happen in half a day — smooth, beautiful and well-trodden by safari operators.

All-inclusive island luxury

Most Bazaruto lodges are fully inclusive: meals, drinks, water sports (kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkelling), boat excursions, dhow cruises and often diving. Once you arrive, you do not reach for your wallet again until you leave. It is the perfect counterpoint to the structured rhythm of a safari — here, you simply drift.

The Best Safari & Beach Combinations

The classic formula is 3–4 nights safari + 4–5 nights beach, totalling 8–10 days. You can skew it either way depending on your priorities.

Kruger (3 nights) + Benguerra Island (5 nights) — 8 days

The most popular first-timer combo. Start with three nights in a mid-range Greater Kruger lodge (Thornybush, Timbavati or Balule) for twice-daily Big Five drives, then fly to Vilanculos and transfer to Benguerra Island for five nights of snorkelling, island picnics, dhow cruises and doing absolutely nothing. Total: 8 days, roughly $5,500–$8,000 per person all-in.

Sabi Sands (4 nights) + Bazaruto Island (5 nights) — 9 days

Step it up with four nights at a luxury Sabi Sands lodge (the finest leopard viewing on earth), followed by five nights on Bazaruto Island at a premium lodge. This is honeymoon-grade luxury at both ends. Total: 9 days, $10,000–$16,000 per person.

Kruger self-drive (3 nights) + Vilanculos mainland (4 nights) — budget option

Self-drive in Kruger's rest camps, then fly to Vilanculos and stay at a beachfront lodge on the mainland (no island transfer needed). More affordable, still beautiful. Total: 7 days, $2,500–$4,000 per person including car rental and flights.

Extended version: Cape Town + Safari + Mozambique — 14 days

If you have the time, start with 3 nights in Cape Town (Table Mountain, the winelands, Cape Point), fly to Kruger for 4 nights, then finish with 5 nights in Mozambique. This is the ultimate South African journey with a tropical finish. See our Cape Town and safari package guide for details.

What to Expect in Mozambique

The beaches and islands

Powder-white sand, warm turquoise water and near-total seclusion. The Bazaruto islands are protected, so development is minimal and strictly controlled. Expect barefoot luxury — your villa will have an ocean view, an outdoor shower, a deck with loungers and direct beach access. The vibe is Robinson Crusoe meets five-star service.

Marine activities

Snorkelling and diving are world-class. The reefs are healthy, and the visibility is excellent (15–30 metres on good days). You will see colourful reef fish, rays, turtles, reef sharks and, if you are lucky, dolphins or migrating humpback whales (August–October). Most lodges include guided snorkel excursions; scuba diving is an optional extra.

Island hopping and dhow cruises

Traditional wooden dhow boats take you between islands for picnic lunches on deserted sandbanks, sunset cruises with champagne, or fishing trips. The pace is slow, the scenery is magical, and it is the perfect way to decompress after the early starts and adrenaline of a safari.

The food and drink

Think fresh seafood — grilled prawns, line-caught fish, lobster, peri-peri chicken — alongside international and Portuguese-influenced cuisine. Most lodges serve three meals a day plus afternoon tea, all included. Bars stock local beers, South African wines and spirits, also included in the all-inclusive rate.

Sample Itineraries

Days 4–8: Fly Nelspruit to Vilanculos, helicopter to Benguerra Island. Four nights all-inclusive: snorkelling, dhow cruises, spa, beach time. Fly Vilanculos–Johannesburg–home.

This is the sweet spot — enough safari for proper sightings, enough beach time to truly unwind. See our Beach & Safari Ultimate package.

Costs & Budgeting (2026)

Budget breakdown (per person, 8–10 days)

Mid-range: $4,500–$7,000 — Comfortable Greater Kruger lodge + good Bazaruto island lodge, all-inclusive. Regional flights and transfers included.
Premium: $8,000–$12,000 — Luxury Sabi Sands + top-tier island property (andBeyond, Azura, Anantara). Private helicopter transfers, premium lodges both ends.
Ultra-luxury: $12,000–$18,000+ — The finest lodges in Sabi Sands + exclusive island villas. Private charters, dedicated guides, bespoke experiences.

What is included

Most packages include: all domestic flights (Johannesburg–Kruger, Kruger–Vilanculos, Vilanculos–Johannesburg), helicopter or boat transfers to the islands, full-board accommodation at both safari and beach lodges, game drives (safari), water sports and excursions (beach), drinks at both lodges, park fees. International flights are extra.

Money-saving tips

Travel May–June or September (shoulder season) for lower lodge rates and fewer crowds. Book 6+ months ahead for early-bird discounts. Consider a mainland Vilanculos lodge instead of island properties to save $1,000–$2,000 per person — still beautiful, just not quite as exclusive.

When to Go

May–October (dry season) — best overall

Prime safari season in Kruger (animals concentrate around water, vegetation is sparse, sightings are easy) and perfect beach weather in Mozambique (warm, sunny, calm seas). This is peak season, so book early. Whale season (humpbacks) runs August–October in Mozambique.

November–March (green season)

The bush is lush and green, Kruger has newborn animals and fewer tourists, and Mozambique is hotter and more humid with occasional afternoon rain. Still lovely if you do not mind the heat, and you will save 20–30% on lodge rates. Avoid late December and January (South African summer holidays — everything is booked solid).

April & November (shoulder months)

The sweet spot for value. Safari conditions are still good (April is the tail end of the rains, November is just before peak season), Mozambique weather is warm and pleasant, and prices are lower than peak. If your dates are flexible, aim here.

Logistics: How It All Works

Flights and transfers

Johannesburg is the main international hub. From there, a 1-hour flight to Skukuza, Hoedspruit or Nelspruit (Kruger). After your safari, a regional flight to Vilanculos (about 90 minutes), followed by a 20-minute helicopter or 45-minute boat ride to the islands. We book and coordinate every leg so you never worry about connections.

Visas and entry

South Africa: most nationalities enter visa-free for tourism (up to 90 days). Mozambique: visa on arrival at Vilanculos airport ($50–$80 USD, cash, varies by nationality). Passport must be valid for six months beyond your travel dates. We provide detailed entry requirements when you book.

Health and vaccinations

Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from a yellow-fever country. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for both Kruger and the Mozambique coast (consult your doctor). No other vaccinations are mandatory, but hepatitis A and typhoid are often advised. Tap water is not drinkable in Mozambique; stick to bottled water (provided at lodges).

Currency and payment

South Africa uses the rand (ZAR); Mozambique uses the metical (MZN), though USD is widely accepted at lodges. Most island lodges are pre-paid and all-inclusive, so you will need minimal cash — just tips for staff (USD works best). ATMs are available in Vilanculos town if needed.

Choosing the Right Lodges

Safari side (Greater Kruger)

For mid-range: Thornybush, Timbavati or Balule lodges offer excellent Big Five viewing at $400–$700 per person per night, all-inclusive. For luxury: Sabi Sands is unmatched — Londolozi, Singita, Lion Sands and others deliver the finest leopard sightings and guiding on earth, at $1,200–$3,000+ per person per night.

Beach side (Mozambique)

For mid-range: lodges like Azura Benguerra or Anantara Bazaruto offer beautiful beachfront villas, full-board and activities from around $500–$900 per person per night. For luxury: andBeyond Benguerra Island is the gold standard — ultra-private, impeccable service, world-class diving, from $1,000+ per person per night.

Mainland vs island

If budget is tight, stay on the Vilanculos mainland at beachfront lodges like Bahia Mar or Archipelago Resort. You lose the exclusivity and helicopter romance but save significantly — and the Indian Ocean is still right there.

Frequently Overlooked Details

Luggage limits

Light aircraft and helicopter transfers to the islands have strict baggage limits: typically 15 kg per person in soft bags only (no hard-shell suitcases). Pack light, leave your big bag at the Johannesburg hotel, or use the lodge's laundry service (usually included). We send detailed packing lists when you book.

Time zone

Mozambique is one hour ahead of South Africa (CAT vs SAST). Not a huge deal, but worth noting when coordinating flights.

Tipping

Safari: tip your ranger and tracker around $10–$20 per person per day (combined). Mozambique: tip lodge staff around $10–$15 per person per day (pooled tip box). Dive instructors and boat crews appreciate $5–$10 per activity. USD works everywhere.

Beyond Bazaruto: Other Mozambique Beach Options

If you prefer something different, Inhambane and Tofo (further south) offer excellent diving, whale sharks year-round and a more backpacker-friendly vibe. Quirimbas Archipelago (far north) is even more remote and exclusive, but currently harder to reach due to regional security. For this guide, Bazaruto remains the best-balanced choice: accessible, safe, world-class and perfectly paired with a Kruger safari.

Who This Trip Is For

This is the ultimate romantic escape — honeymooners, anniversaries and couples seeking both adventure and total relaxation. It is also superb for families (Bazaruto lodges welcome children and have dedicated kids' clubs), active travellers who want diving and bush walks, and first-time safari-goers who want the full African experience without flying all over the continent. If you want lions and coral reefs in a single, beautifully designed journey, this is it.

Frequently Asked Questions

The classic bush-and-beach route flies you from Johannesburg to the Greater Kruger for 3–4 nights of Big Five safari, then a short regional flight to Vilanculos on Mozambique's coast. From there, a helicopter or boat transfer takes you to the Bazaruto Archipelago islands for 4–5 nights of pure beach time. The whole journey is typically 8–10 days, and we handle all flights and transfers so the switch from bush to beach is straightforward.

Budget roughly $4,500–$7,500 per person for a comfortable 8–10 day trip (mid-range Kruger lodge + good Bazaruto island lodge, all-inclusive). Premium combinations with luxury Sabi Sands lodges and top Bazaruto properties run $9,000–$15,000+ per person. Prices include flights, transfers, full-board lodging and activities at both ends.

May to October is ideal — the South African safari season is at its best (dry, excellent game viewing) and the Mozambique coast enjoys warm, sunny days with calm seas perfect for diving and snorkelling. November to March brings green season in the bush and hotter, more humid coastal weather with occasional rain, but it's still beautiful and less crowded.

Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Vilanculos airport (around $50–$80 USD, cash). Some travellers prefer applying in advance. Your passport must be valid for at least six months. We provide detailed entry requirements when you book.

The Bazaruto Archipelago is a chain of five islands off Mozambique's southern coast, protected as a national park. Think powder-white beaches, turquoise water, coral reefs teeming with marine life and total seclusion. The two main islands with lodges are Benguerra and Bazaruto Island. It's one of the Indian Ocean's last untouched gems — no crowds, just you, the ocean and pristine nature.

Yes, though most guests prefer a guided safari for the expertise and better sightings. If you do self-drive in Kruger, you would leave your rental car at Skukuza or Nelspruit airport before your flight to Vilanculos. We recommend booking a private guided safari instead — you see far more, learn more, and the lodge handles everything.

The southern coast (Vilanculos, Inhambane and the Bazaruto Archipelago) is safe, well-developed for tourism and popular with international travellers. The northern regions have had security concerns in recent years, but the areas covered in this guide — the islands and southern beach towns — are stable, secure and welcoming. Always check current travel advisories before you go.
