Why Mvuu Lodge

The Rooms & Setting
Accommodation is a handful of thatched, open-fronted chalets and safari suites strung along the riverbank, each framed to the water. Interiors are cool and natural — canvas, timber and stone, netted four-poster beds, and private verandas where the day begins with coffee and the sight of elephants across the channel. A raised central lounge and dining area, a small pool and a campfire deck complete a camp built for slow, golden evenings.

The signature experience is the boat safari — low, silent and thrilling — gliding along the Shire past pods of hippo, basking crocodiles and elephants drinking at the edge. Game drives explore the floodplain and mopane woodland, where Liwonde's rewilded cast now includes lion, cheetah, black rhino, buffalo and one of Africa's densest elephant populations. Guided walks, superb birding (over 400 species) and night drives round out the days.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season (May to October) concentrates wildlife on the Shire and offers the classic Liwonde safari, with September and October the peak for big herds. The green season (November to April) brings dramatic skies, newborn animals and outstanding birding, and the river runs full and beautiful.
