Rovos Rail — The "Pride of Africa"
The character: Nostalgic, romantic, gloriously old-world. Rovos Rail restored genuine vintage carriages, and stepping aboard feels like time travel to the 1920s golden age of rail — wood panelling, brass fittings, and a rear observation car with an open-air balcony where you can feel the wind and photograph the passing wilderness (the windows even open).
Suites
- Pullman (≈7m²): the entry suite — a sofa converting to bunks, en-suite bathroom.
- Deluxe (≈10m²): the sweet spot — a double or twin plus a proper lounge area.
- Royal (≈16m²): half a carriage, with a full Victorian bathtub and space to entertain.
Signature routes
- Pretoria ↔ Cape Town (the classic, ~2 nights) via Kimberley and the Karoo.
- Pretoria ↔ Victoria Falls — the bushveld-to-waterfall epic, often with a game drive.
- Durban, Namibia, and the great trans-continental journeys to Dar es Salaam and beyond.
The Blue Train — A Moving Five-Star Hotel
The character: Contemporary, smooth and supremely comfortable — a modern "moving palace". Fully stabilised and soundproofed, with butler service, gold-and-cream interiors, and picture windows. Where Rovos is a step back in time, The Blue Train is timeless five-star hospitality in motion.

- Deluxe Suite: lounge by day, bedroom by night (staff convert it while you dine), en-suite with shower.
- Luxury Suite: larger, many with a full-size bathtub — the only train in Africa to offer them — and butler service throughout.

- Pretoria ↔ Cape Town (the flagship, ~1 night / ~27 hours) with a stop at Kimberley or Matjiesfontein.
- Occasional special departures to the Kruger area and beyond.

Fares are per person sharing, all-inclusive of accommodation, gourmet meals and curated South African wines; they vary by season and suite. Premium spirits and gratuities are typically excluded.
What Is All-Inclusive Really Like?
On both trains, the fare covers your suite, all meals, high tea, and South African wines and most beverages. Expect:
- Gourmet dining in a wood-and-crystal dining car — think Karoo lamb, Cape crayfish, and estate wines from Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.
- Off-train excursions — the diamond history of Kimberley, the Victorian village of Matjiesfontein, or a Big Game excursion on longer Rovos routes.
- A dress code: smart-casual by day; formal for dinner (jacket and tie for gentlemen, evening wear for ladies). Dressing up is half the romance.

- Days 1–3: Private Big Five safari in the Sabi Sand or Greater Kruger — leopards, lions and unhurried game drives.
- Days 4–5: Board the train (Rovos or Blue Train) for the grand crossing to Cape Town through the Highveld and Karoo.
- Days 6–10: Cape Town — Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula, and the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

When to Travel
- May–September (dry season): best for a train-and-safari combo — superb wildlife viewing and crisp, clear light. Book 12–18 months ahead for peak dates.
- April & October (shoulder): lower fares, fewer crowds, lovely weather.
- November–March (summer): lush, green landscapes and excellent birding; warmer days.
